Muscle Shoals based engineer working with Single Lock Records. Over a decade of experience working on all aspects of finishing songs, including production, tracking, and mixing. My goal is to provide service that enhances your music and takes it over the edge.
I am an audio engineer and multi-instrumentalist based in the Shoals area, and work from the Sun Drop Sound recording studio as well as my home studio.
I've worked on many projects alongside the label Single Lock Records, and understand the full range of what goes into making records.
With every project I'm involved in, I hold a very high standard for quality and emotional impact. My primary focus is doing everything in my ability to help the artist achieve their vision.

It’s nice working with a guy that genuinely cares about your songs and elevates them to the best they can be. Hit him up. We are glad we did.
He is a genuinely brilliant engineer, and an all around great person to work with. He puts just as much care and love into the song as you would. He has an already insane base of knowledge, and he’s constantly learning new techniques from other top tier engineers in the field. Hire him before he’s too booked that you can’t!
I have worked with Austin on a number of projects and he always keeps the artist’s vision first. His intentionality, emotional awareness, and creativity are what make him outstanding.
Interview with Austin Motlow
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I would recommend Drew Kellough for all drum and percussion needs.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I love both and consider them to be tools for us to use however we want. Music doesn't have any rules or guidelines, so I use whatever it takes to get the sounds closer to what I envision in my mind. Certain analog pieces do something that digital can't, and the opposite is also true.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I always ask for reference songs of your favorite music. I tend to spend a lot of time listening to inspiring music to get more into that world so that my production and mixing decisions are aligned.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I consider myself to be a creative collaborator to the music. I want to bring out as much magic as possible from songs, and love experimenting with new ideas each time I approach a project. I do a lot of A/B comparisons to keep myself in check to be sure I'm always adding value and emotion to what I'm working on.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: The Sun Drop Sound studio where I do most of my tracking engineering and production is a fully equipped space with a Studer 16 channel console, Neotek Elan 28 channel console, outboard compressors, preamps, and EQ's, a Tascam MS-16 tape machine, Ampex MM1000, Scully 1/4 inch Mastering tape machine, and a wide variety of vintage microphones and instruments. My home studio is where I do most mixing, and I have a pair of PMC 6 monitors with a Neumann KH750 sub, Yamaha NS10's, and some desktop computer speakers for reference. I use a Universal Audio Apollo x8p with a variety of UAD plugins, as well as Soundtoys, FabFilter, Waves Bundle, Eventide, etc.
