Interview with Mixed By Robn
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I worked with UK Rap Artist Giggs on a song featured on his last project Now or Never called Debonair. I tracked the vocals for that songs, and was a proud moment being able to work with him in the studio.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm currently working on a solo project of mine.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both are great. Personally i love to mix in the box just for the added flexibility.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That i'm not finished until the client is satisfied!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: That i'm able to work with extremely talented and creative individuals.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: the most common question asked is how fast is the turn around for a mix and if revisions are provided. I have unlimited revisions until the client is satisfied.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That mixing is a quick process. Good mixes need a bit of time to come out correctly. Typically 3 -4 hours.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: i would ask what is their vision for the song, to provide some references, and what type of feeling they want to bring out of the mix.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: To make sure that all tracks are properly labelled, and to have a clean recording.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I would take a laptop, A great pair of speakers, an audio interface and a midi keyboard.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I was always destined to be in music from a young age. I have been working as a mix engineer for eight years now.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would say my style is a well balanced low end thats punchy, while maintaining a good balance between the mids and the highs. With vocals being upfront and present, without sounding harsh.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Snoh Aalegra, I think she has a beautiful tone to her voice.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: To monitor quiet predominately when mixing, and turning it up loud only for short periods for reference.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on Hip hop, Pop, and Rnb.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I would say my strongest skill would definitely be mixing & producing vocals! I feel like thats my niche and my strength. To make them sound upfront and present without sounding harsh, while also being able to give them depth and space by using the stereo field through multi effects.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I believe i bring depth and clarity to a mix. Using front to back mixing techniques, and playing with the stereo field. I love a deep punchy low end, with clear mids, and a crisp high end without making it sound harsh.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My mixing process is top down. I start always with getting a good balance and gain staging everything correctly. I then will tackle the low end and dial that in first, as well as the vocals. I then build the everything around that. Those to me are usually the most important elements within a song. If you get that right, you're off to the races.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio setup is clean and simple! I love having the flexibility of being able to work in the box. My audio interface is a Universal Audio Apollo and a pair of Yamaha HS8 Studio monitors. If it translates well through those speakers, then I know it will translate well on everything else.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Anyone that pushes boundaries and breaks the rules! When it comes to mixing engineers it would have to be Jaycen Joshua, Mike Dean, Mixed By Ali, & Manny Marroquin! When it comes to other musicians my favorites would have to be Kanye West, Travis Scott, Saint JHN, The Weeknd, and Drake.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common work that I do for clients is mixing & mastering. However, I do also provide other services as a producer & as a songwriter. I'm lucky to be able to work with so many talented individuals.
