Interview with Alex Geary
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I haven't been on SoundBetter long enough to know.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital. I think analog is cool and fun, but I think if you research into the physics and science of what is happening with sound with analog gear, and what you can do to emulate that in the box, there is no reason to go with analog since it's far less convenient for mixing especially in terms of workflow (not to mention to price of analog gear)
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to deliver something they are happy with. So I offer revisions in order for the client to be happy.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I like being able to earn money from working with music which is a life-long passion of mine.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: People think I am a DJ.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask them what their goal is with their music. When they want to work with me, I ask for a reference mix to get a gauge of what they are in to, and also a rough mix from them.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: PC, SSD, Interface, Monitors, Headphones
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been studying, playing and creating music for over 20 years. I started out as a classically trained pianist and violinist, and migrated over to production later on.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I'm realistic and serious with what I do. But I'm also kind and genuinely want the best for my clients.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I like to work with artists who are on the rise because it would be cool to be part of the beginnings of something great.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Less is better. Make sure each element you choose is interesting in itself and don't add too many elements to a mix if you can help it.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on chill music, but am looking to get more experience with more mainstream genres.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is mastering as I believe I have an objective an analytical ear
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I like to get a song to match up to industry standards, be well-balanced, and mixed so that everything is able to be heard.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I typically organize a session first, then start editing vocals with time alignment and tuning. I also edit drums in terms of timing, and will add drum samples or replacement if necessary for the best end result.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a minimal setup with a couple of 7 inch monitors and closed back headphones. I work in Ableton Live and Studio One.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Jacob Collier is an amazing musician who inspires me with production and music writing. Chillhop producers also inspire me with their unique sound and often very pleasing jazz musicianship.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mix and master to get a track sounding good and ready for release.
