Interview with Joey D
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Oh gosh, I would have to say the first ever full length album I executively produced. There was no better feeling in the world being in charge of so much for the first time. I knew it was what I wanted to do with the rest of my life!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Albums, singles and mixing/mastering. Check out Olivia Gunn! She would be the next project I will have credits on in the near future.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Honestly I need to explore SoundBetter as a user to let you know. I'm sure you can find exactly who you're looking for depending on your needs.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both... it's 2022! I respect where we came from but I also can't deny where it's heading. Integrating both has been a challenge that I have enjoyed conquering.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That if you don't love it we will do it again and again until it's perfect.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Successfully translating an idea in someones head to a fully produced piece of art.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: "What just happened!?" I move very quickly and find that my pace can be intimidating to newer artists. From there I usually start to over communicate my moves so we are always on the same page.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I would say that sometimes people think I don't have a life because I'm in a studio everyday all day. I try to take my dogs on a hike once a day as well as go out with friends and family when I can.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Super cliche but "How are you?" goes a long way. It is the common denominator for 99% of all the records I have made. It is hard to make songs you aren't feeling, so finding out how they feel is very important to me.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be open and honest with me. We are a collection of every sound we have ever heard and I want to know more about how YOU hear the world.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My Laptop, my Barefoot Monitors, a Sony c800, my guitar and a drum kit. We will just assume all the cables are included :)
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started as a DJ when I was 14. From there I learned the power of a song and what it could do to a room... I wanted to have the power to do what those songs did so I started experimenting with production. That's what lead me to a clean sound comparing my songs to the ones people wanted to hear out in public. I would say it gave me my advantage!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I mentioned it before briefly but I love a clean sound. I want my artist to sound like they're on a million dollar stage with the most expensive equipment and effects.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: The Weeknd... I just want to experience the work ethic and vision.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Yes! Mix in mono... They don't play your song in Chipotle in stereo so make sure it sounds good mono if you want to be heard haha!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, Indie/Alt, Hip Hop, Rnb and instrumentals. (No order, I love it all)
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Sonics. I would say people mostly come to me for a clean cut sound. I try to take ideas and make them less "foggy."
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Communication. I find music to be a language and as musicians we tend to speak it more complex than those who don't understand it. I try to merge the two so the average listener feels like they keep up with what the Artist is trying to say.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I love making an artists vision come true. This often comes with blurred lines between music producer and a therapist... LOL. I love it!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I currently mix on Barefoot monitors and use a lot of Universal Audio and SSL gear.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Mike Dean, Louis Bell, Manny Marroquin, and Paul Lamalfa
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I primarily produce in Nashville but often end up mixing and mastering songs as well. Lately everyone is touring so I have been mixing and mastering more for people on the road.
