Hey I'm Mike, a composer and producer from Perth, Western Australia! I've been composing soundtracks for film and tv for the last 10 years, and have recently stepped into the production world, creating songs with Sync in mind. From Epic and huge, to Subtle and Intimate, what ever you're looking for, if it's cinematic, I can help!!

I can take your idea from the demo phase all the way to the end, mixed, and mastered. Or if you just need help developing a song/extra production i can do that too. If you're looking for someone to score your film or ad, I can also help with that. My music has been used around the world in various films and tv and I've had the pleasure to score a number of short films.

Interview with Michael Ellery

Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Haunting Me(the example track) is one of my favourites. It was one of the first songs i'd done as a song with lyrics and vocals and it turned out really good.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Heaps! Always working on new tracks for Sync, i have a couple singer-songwriter style tracks i'm producing at the moment, as well as a dark-pop style album for a library/agent.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: If you're looking for female vocalists with a stunning cinematic sound, Katie J is incredible! I've had her on multiple projects of mine (including my example track) and she's great!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: You'll get the song you want! I will work with you until you are completely happy with the final product!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: It's an opportunity to be creative, and no project is the same! Every song I work on is different in some way, with elements that i can bring across from others.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What's the end goal of your song/project? What are some artists you love the sound of?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be as specific as possible! References are great! If you've got songs you really like the sound of send them through! And just communicate! I'm pretty easy to talk to, so if you don't like something, just tell me!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: As i mentioned in my blurb, i've been composing for film and TV for about 10 years, but have started producing songs with vocals in the last year. I've had some pretty good success with my composition career, and am looking to take my Production career further!
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Tommee Profitt for Sure! His stuff is awesome and he's had the opportunity to work with some real cool artists!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: To create space, or volume, ie get something louder, you need to take away from what's taking it's space. Whether that's through EQ, Panning or Volume.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: At the moment i'm mostly working on Cinematic-pop and Dark-pop. I've been working on creating a bunch of cinematic style stuff you'd hear on the montages of Greys Anatomy or something with a writer friend. Songs that tell a story, both lyrically and Sonically.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Definitely my passion for a cinematic sound. Being able to take a song, and just elevate it with things like strings, or horns, or even just a general soundscape is one of the things I love doing! That and my love of harmonies! I'm predominantly a harmony singer, and i love all things harmonies especially in strings, i think they can really elevate the emotion in a song.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Definitely inspired by Tommee Profitt, Hidden Citizens and UNSECRET! Their overall cinematic sound is so clean and polished! They're my biggest inspiration at the moment, but really i'm always inspired by all sorts of music at the moment. There's always something i hear and go "oh that's cool how they did that, or used that"
