Interview with DJ H Chimist
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I produced the album "Mystik & DJ H in the streets of Marseille" in 2010, gathering a big part of the french national rap scene. It was a premiere at the time and a lot of experience acquired at that time.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am working on several personal musical projects, including the original soundtrack for a film series.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I'm new here, so no.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. In 2022 you have to be able to stay very modern but with the little smell and warmth of the oldskool.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: For them, not to start from scratch. For me, to do the maximum to reach their goal.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: A feeling of freedom, freedom to have taken the step to live from music. To organize one's planing independently from the others. Receive bursts of happiness by collaborating or discovering other artists.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Can my music be included in your Spotify playlist? I tell them "yes" if I like it.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: For me: Success is a ready-made recipe. Wrong, success is a combination of unexpected circumstances mixed with hard work, a touch of hope and the non-negotiable authenticity of one's art :).
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is your goal for this song?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I would advise him to exploit all the ideas he would have to bring his project where he wants. This would allow a better exchange and a good fluidity in the work.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A flint stone for fire. An axe to create my habitat. A fishing rod. A solar powered satellite phone, to be able to hear my relatives from time to time. A Michael Jackson 'Thriller' vinyl in case I manage to build a rudimentary system to play it.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been in music since I was young. I produced in the beginning of the albums with very known rapper in the world of the French Rap. Little by little I didn't produce only for rap anymore, I went where I always wanted, other musical genres. Today I work with artists from all over the world in different languages and different styles, and I like the mix. I think it's the principle of music, the exchange :)
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I have the multi-hat style, very open to any kind of style if it makes me move my head :)
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would like to work with pop, electro pop, pop rock or even rap artists. Such as Sia or Zoe Reez for example but there are many others.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Work only if you feel like it, don't force the inspiration, it will be felt in your song.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work on several musical genres. It can be pop, rock, rap, reggaeton or even film music. It all depends on the inspiration of the moment.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I am as competent in production as I am in mixing and mastering.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I can give it consistency by adding production elements (drums, bass, atmospheric electronic melody). I can also make the sound more alive by giving it a particular warmth during a mix or a mastering.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Attentive listening, analysis of the work, search for ideas and careful application of the work.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a standars configuration, mixing console and good monitoring system. I usually work on big creation and mixing software such as Cubase, Pro tools or Ableton for example, depending on the needs.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am quite eclectic in musical genres. Bands like Coldplay or Imagine Dragons can inspire me but also rap or even dance music, it all depends on how I feel about the music, if I like it, I listen :)
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I generally do mix, mastering and dressing of drums, bass, electronic melodies (project arrangement)
