Interview with Karim Attoumane
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I believe my strongest skill is to really understand what the artist is up to, and then find the sonic direction that matches with the essence of the song.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring more "flesh" to a song. I try to complement the artist's ideas with mine, and what I record is here to serve the song and hopefully bring it to the next level.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My work process is quite simple and quick, as everything in my studio is pretty much ready to be recorded. I open a session, choose an amplifier and start jamming ideas right away.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is based around a music PC running Cubase Pro, with a 16 audio inputs Focusrite interfaces. Connected to the patchbay are my Neve and Warm Audio mic preamps and my analog outboard gear (LA-2A, Dbx and Distressor compressors, guitar preamps and multieffects). I then have a collection of classic microphones including a Neuman U87, a pair of Akg C414s, a Royer R121 ribbon mic among others, used to record vocals, acoustic instruments and my collection of tube amplifiers.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am ispired by the great session guitarists like Steve Lukather, Tim Pierce or Michael Landau, the sound of classic rock bands like Queen, Pink Floyd or U2, or the work of professionals like Nigel Godrich, Daniel Lanois or Rick Rubin.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I typically provide arrangement ideas for other artists and I record high quality guitar tracks for this purpose.
