Interview with Sully Allen
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First and foremost is ascertaining the intent of the artist. What the artist's goals for their work is. After such, I work through my process of cleaning, and tightening ( to the extent that is appropriate to the artist) of the source audio. After which I process the audio according to my own instincts and insights. Ultimately, the process dictates what best serves the client, and what they most want from their work.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work with a modest SSL 2+ interface. Through which I employ a dbx 223xs crossover into a Yamaha P2050 amp that powers a pair of Yamaha NS-10s. In addition, the dbx 223xs feeds a sub of un remarkable design, providing a much needed low end to the NS-10s. I also employ a pair of Ollo S4X headphones, also linked to the same SSL interface.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm inspired by all artist and engineers that push the boundaries of creativity and expression through sound. Whether that be Indie artists like Alex G, Chanel Beads, Andy Shauf, or Pop artists like FKA Twigs, Underscore, Gorillaz. Hip hop legends like De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, MF Doom. Jazz and Neo Soul artists like Kamasi Washington, Robert Glasper, Hiatus Kaiyote. Engineers and Producers like Shawn Everett, Nigel Godrich, and Jonathan Maia. Im inspired also by all artforms; from writing, visual, and audio. Every vertice is of intrest to me and informs my practice.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I provide finished, professional mixes and/or masters through SoundBetter. In addition, I work with in clients, in vivo, providing professional recordings at Maze Studios in Atlanta GA.
