Interview with Josh Thomas
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: be descriptive as your hearts content with me! i do best going off of vibes to help get me invested in the project. the emotion you put behind the music is what's most important, my job is to help bring that out.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: i work off a few quality pieces to get the results i'm looking for. i love recording vocals with my warm 8000 condenser mic (clone of the sony c800) into my universal audio twin x interface, which gets me a super bright, pop-star sound at the source. i reference all my mixes on adam audio t8 monitors with the t10 sub to get a full spectral picture of my mix, plus my akg k553 and audio technica m50 monitoring headphones. for when i want an analog sound, which i go for a lot, i'll grab a universal audio compressor or vinyl/tape/cassette emulation to get a super warm, nostalgic sounds. i do love pop music for its punchy brightness, and i consider my style a modern blend between the two. at my studio, i also have fenders and a martin acoustic as well as a number of microphone choices depending on the project.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: i love collaborating with artists from scratch based off what's inspiring them at the moment, or even taking a demo track of theirs and bringing in it full. whenever i invest myself in the project, i'm doing it to make the jump and create something people can really resonate with. for recording clients, i will let them work their magic and give them a little push and nudge where need be (so long as they express they're open to feedback). the number one thing when it comes to recording is energy and emotion, and i let those be the guiding principles to getting a good track. for mix & master remote-work, i go by the industry standard levels of loudness and frequency distribution to get a good sound on any system or streaming service. i believe the mix should speak for itself, and mastering should be about transparently hitting the industry standard levels for a smooth listening experience all the way through.
