Hired Kyle for production/writing work on a film project. He created for us score, score that sounded like needle drops, and needle drops that sounded like specific (huge) songs we loved. It was pretty incredible. Kyle was super open to feedback, throughout. Quick to respond, fast to deliver. Can't reco him enough.

Not only is Kyle Rictor a true professional, he is also a musical genius. Being fortunate enough to have worked with Kyle, has left me floored by his passion, natural musical gifts, his knowledge / application of building a song from the ground up and his humility. Kyle also has extensive experience fine tuning and writing songs across multiple genres of music. Kyle is an impressive creative and one of the best things about working with Kyle is that he understands the language of an artist. Working with him felt so natural and intuitive because he puts 100% of himself in the creative process!

Kyle produced and mixed my EP entitled Starting Over back in 2019. I can honestly say that it would not have come together if it weren't for him. Making an album of music is obviously so much more than a technical accomplishment. It's highly emotional. The songs on that particular body of work meant the world to me and Kyle handled each track with love and care. He took them on as if it were his only job in the world. So not only can he accomplish the technical musicality of producing, but it's the heart behind each of his music decisions that sets Kyle apart. I can't recommend him enough.

Kyle and I have worked together for over a decade at this point and I can very confidently say he’s one of the most talented creative people I’ve ever met! His vocal talent is unique and practiced, meaning he can perform just about anything you’re looking for. He also has GREAT instincts as a producer - knowing what tones fit together, finding a groove, and creating a mood are all his strong-suits. He is a world class talent and a joy to work with.

Kyle is the best of the best, an absolute master of his craft. His work and creativity have never ceased to amaze me. In addition to that he has his own signature vibe and style that will set your project a part from everything else… not to mention he’s a Grammy Award winning friggin songwriter, and for good reason.

Work with this gem of a human now while you can.

Kyle is a true artist and a deft collaborator. Always pushing but never pushy, and understands the often overlooked super power of vulnerability. Smash that hire button and never look back

Kyle is a master at pulling out the right emotion of any song or Vocalist! He has many impressive credits to his name, but always remains humble and kind during the creative process. I would recommend Kyle and his songwriting, vocals or production to anyone at any level!

Interview with Kyle Rictor

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Gosh, I'm always most excited about what I'm working on in the moment, but probably an EP I released called "Monsters". Every song is just an acoustic and a vocal. I made the whole thing with my wife, who is singing harmonies with me. It's my love letter to campfire tunes and a song holding up on just an acoustic.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm writing and co-producing a song about hope.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Analog. Because it's alive and always kind of changing with time. Aging like we do!

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I promise to never settle for "good enough"! You can expect me to always treat your song with the utmost care and respect.

  9. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  10. A: How many edits do I get per song? My answer is that I will always work with you until you're totally satisfied with the end product. Period!

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: Producing is a bunch of button pushing and techical know-how. Yes there is button-pushing, but mostly it's about being quiet. Listening, hearing someone else's point of view and melding it with your own to make something great than the sum of its parts.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: I'll start with the timeline and references. References are a really efficient way to express a thought or feeling. I have worked around deadlines before, so let me know if you're under the gun and we'll make it work. Also, knowing the context around the project always offers insight into how to approach the request. I'll ask about whether the song is a single or part of a larger project and what your short and long-term goals are.

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: Don't hesitate! It's ok not to know where the song is going to end up, as long as you don't let that stop you from making it. Get that idea out in the world FIRST...then world domination :)

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: Guitar, Digital Recorder, SM57, Headphones, XLR Cable

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I've been doing this for almost 20 years! I went to Belmont University for audio engineering before dropping out to pursue music full-time and never looked back!

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: My style is earnest, dynamic, and a little quirky.

  23. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  24. A: Ryan Courtney, Luke Atlas

  25. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  26. A: The way it connects me to other creative people!

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: You will find me mostly in the indie pop, alt rock, and singer-songwriter world

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: Getting to the heart of an idea

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: I bring a balance of play and craft to each project. You have to know the rules to break them. And it's really fun breaking rules.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: When making a song, it often starts as a single phrase or even just a word that is provocative to me in some way. With it comes a whole universe that I then get to uncover and crystallize over time.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: I record in the countryside in the quiet northeastern corner of New England. I've worked in my studio space for the last decade. It's controlled chaos. Synthesizers, mic cables, guitar racks, amps, neon signs, pedal boards, mic lockers, drum machines. I like to play when I make music, and that is on full display in my studio.

  37. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  38. A: I would love to work with Martin Luke Brown. I think what he's doing in Folk/Pop is very interesting right now.

  39. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  40. A: If you like it, bounce it. It helps you to trust your instincts, commit, and reduces mental and CPU load.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I'm inspired by brave choices. Kids with a cracked laptop and a fire idea. Something unapologetic and a little wrong, even. Cameron Winter, Martin Luke Brown, Big Thief, and Billie Marten come to mind.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I write and produce songs for both myself and others!
