Interview with Brian Blickenstaff
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been writing songs for myself since high school and gigged around a lot in college as a singer-songwriter. Alongside my career in journalism I began writing lyrics for other people.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mostly indie rock and folk/Americana stuff. But I have a wide range.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I am a writer in addition to being a songwriter. I work with words all day every day. I play music too, but my superpower is writing.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring the story
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I talk to the client and arrive on a specific theme/emotion and talk about the characters in the song. These could be real people (like the artist) or fictional people. And form there I work on a lyrical idea and bring it to the client for feedback.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I love good lyrics. In the rock/folk space I'm thinking of Paul Simon, Fruit Bats, Fleetwood Mac, Ezra Ferrman, Big Thief. But I also love 90s hiphop: Naz, Notorious BIG, Nas, Mos Def, etc.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I am from California but live in Europe and help European writers write great lyrics in English.
