Interview with Sonic Dreamer Studio
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Pistis. It is a cinematic piece I recently created that just wraps up the human emotions so well in just a few minutes: https://soundcloud.com/sonic-dreamer/pistis
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Check on my blog, always busy with an artist - always: https://sonicdreamerstudio.blogspot.com/p/pipeline.html
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital is the thing. But I always try to sound analogue.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will do my best for you. I give, I don't take.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Music is so mysterious and creates so many pictures, it becomes a movie for me. I really do - as the name Sonic Dreamer says, dream in sound.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I often work for free. People assume I make quick beats using samples. In reality I often start with a vocalist, and have to write the lyrics, melody and create the music (play and record analogue instruments) and top it all off with mixing and mastering. Even the album art comes from this studio. All of it free, too often. What can I say, I'm a fool for music!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My saxophone, I love her! And an acoustic guitar.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Home studio music production since 2007. Got a Recording Engineer diploma from Audio Institute of America in 2010, I was an honour student. I've been a part time musician for almost all my life in my band, After Hours (South Africa)
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Organic!
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: People who feel they have potential and who invest in their skills, and those who are serious about they're goals.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Create music because you want to, not because you need to.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, Rock and Blues. Ballads are quite a favoured.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Sticking with the artist until the end of the production.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: A unique sound that includes analogues bass, guitar and saxophone
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: https://sonicdreamerstudio.blogspot.com/p/production-management.html
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: https://sonicdreamerstudio.blogspot.com/p/the-studio.html
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Mostly '80s when I was young - including Ice House, Depeche Mode, U2, Talk Talk, Tears For Fears etc.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Vocalists often want to sing on a brand new track. The studio can write the lyrics and melody, and create the arrangement and music and for the track.
