Interview with Aisyah
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I'd love to work with H.E.R. and Victoria Monét because I admire their lyricism and the way they write their melodies (especially their catchy hooks). Other artists and producers I'd love to work with are Mura Masa, Snoh Aalegra, Timbaland, Raveena, Pharrell, ChloexHalle, Yuna, Sabrina Claudio, Solange, KAYTRANADA and James Blake.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I put my all into each project – every song I work on receives my full care and attention to detail!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love meeting/collaborating with other amazing artists, producers, and songwriters! I enjoy the process of creating songs with different types of people and learning from one another.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What kind of message/story do you want to portray in the song? What is the key, bpm and structure of your track?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Provide some reference tracks and be as detailed as you can about what you're looking for. This will help me understand what you need and how we can work together to achieve your vision.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Starting from the age of 7, I played the violin for four years before moving on to the guitar and piano, and then settling on my current primary instrument, the voice. As the years went by, I discovered an immense fascination for sound design and often created beats on GarageBand at home, then soon realized I wanted to pursue a career in music composition and production. I decided to go into film scoring due to my interest in musical storytelling for visual media, so in 2013 I relocated from my home country Brunei to Rochester, NY to attain a Bachelor of Arts degree in music and an Honors project in film scoring. I also collaborated with local filmmakers to score the music for their projects while undergoing my studies. After graduating in 2017, I moved to Los Angeles and broke into the professional music industry through Hans Zimmer's Remote Control Productions. I then moved on to work with composer and producer Bryce Jacobs at Arkenstone, Inc. in 2018. While working with Bryce, I've been a part of the music team for projects such as Walt Disney Pictures’ “Christopher Robin,” Netflix’s “Daybreak,” Legendary Entertainment’s “Skyscraper,” Marvel’s “Cloak & Dagger,” and many more. In addition to this, I was also scoring music for my own collaborations with independent filmmakers, and have also produced, written, performed and self-published my own songs. At the beginning of 2021, I moved back to Brunei and have continued working in the music field as a freelance producer, songwriter and singer, and have also branched out into the voiceover industry. Some notable projects I've worked on are: producing LoFi tracks inspired by popular video games and anime films/shows for Figurama Collectors, recording vocals for Amazon Prime Video's TV series "The Wheel of Time", and recording voiceover for a YouTube series with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Luscious vocal textures. My lyricism tends to lean towards a reflective story-telling tone.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, R&B, Electronic and film music.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I arrange interesting vocal stacks to compliment the instrumental track and mood of the song. I also embrace experimenting and love to use my voice in unconventional ways!
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Each project is different and sometimes require different approaches, but I usually start by playing the instrumental track on repeat and freestyle some melodies while thinking about the topic of the song. When I find one I really like, I'll develop that idea – this is the point where I usually start thinking about lyrics while I develop the melody. Depending how the process goes, I'll either write the hook/chorus or start with the verses and pre-choruses. After getting the lyrics, I'll record the lead vocals first and then build the double tracks, background vocals, and ad-libs around it.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Songwriting (lyrics and melody), vocal arrangement, cutting vocals, and demos.
