Interview with James Blvck

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Recently, I released a track under my artist name called "Liberate". I am proud of that because Joseph Capriati played the track in his set at Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) 2022. That mix went on to be the #1 selling techno album on itunes in America. It just proved to me that my music is liked by some of the industry pros. That support meant the world to me.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: An EP for my personal project as James Blvck

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Whatever suits the track. I don't think one is better than the other - they are just different.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: That I will treat you with love and respect during our time together and that you will have a smile from ear to ear when you hear the final product.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Working on music. There is nothing in this world I love more than music. It has always been the thing that has been consistent in my life and what's on my mind 24/7. Anytime I get to work on or listen to music, I feel at peace.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: That a good mix and master needs a lot of technical know'-how to make it professional. The truth it, it doesn't. There are many YouTube videos of amateurs giving bad advice and it confuses beginners. A good mix starts with a good idea. From there, it's all about great sound selection and volume balance of those sounds. The rest is just about understanding EQ, Compression, Reverb and Delay.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: 1. Who are 3 artists who influence you? 2. What artists do you think have the best mixes/masters? 3. What space do you imagine your music being played in? (Arenas, clubs, headphones, etc) 4. What DON'T you want your music to sound like?

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: Understand WHY you want your music worked on by somebody else while understanding WHAT you want out of the final product. You should own your music and its direction while of course being open to suggestion.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: My computer, external hard drive, headphones, acoustic guitar, mini MIDI keyboard

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: My career path is currently to become a full time touring producer/DJ. I've been seriously at this for two years but started this journey over 8 years ago.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: Emotional, raw, in your face. I grew up listening to rock and heavy metal while also playing these genres as a long-time guitarist. The soul of those genres of music heavily influence my current style as a techno and progressive producer.

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: Deadmau5 - I don't think there is anyone on the planet who understands songwriting and keeping production simple but powerful as well as he does.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: Volume and proper sound selection is the most important (and underrated) skill of any good producer.

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: Techno, Progressive, Melodic House. I also love to dabble in pop, hip-hop, and ambient music in my spare time.

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: Mixing without a doubt. It's something I naturally picked up early on as a producer and something that has always clicked for me. I become obsessed with the perfect balance of sound to make a mix all that it can be.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: Experience, passion, love of music, and love for other people's music dreams coming true. There's really nothing like seeing someone's musical vision come to life.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: Listen to a track a few times and take notes so that I can approach the session with clear direction and purpose. From there, it's about working in a logical way: drag all the faders down, set the "hero" of the track at a certain level, build everything else around that. Once volume is taken care of, I start to look at panning, depth, and loudness to make the track shine and have important elements pop out of the mix. I am a big believer that volume and sound selection is 90% of the mixing process. From there, everything else becomes 10x easier, including mastering the final product

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: Simple studio setup: Macbook Pro, Focal Alpha Monitors, Audio Technica AT2020 Mic. In terms of plugins, I have just about every professional plugin you could want as a producer - Ableton 11, FabFilter Pro suite, Plugin Alliance Subscription, Izotope suite, Soundtoyz, etc.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: ANNA, Eric Prydz, Tale Of Us, Deadmau5, Stephan Bodzin

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: I haven't officially worked with any clients but I produce, mix, and master for my personal project, "James Blvck". Look me up on Spotify, Apple Music, etc to get a feel for what my music sounds like.
