Interview with Madame Jae
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: So my love for video game music is huge. Being an intern/extern as a music producer for Cellec Games was an amazing experience. I composed a reggae piece and a jazz inspired piece for their gaming needs. It was so fun and I hope to write more gaming music in the near future.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Kris Bradley (BoomFox Productions). She's a mentor of mine and communicates so clearly. Kris is professional and compassionate.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to give you my all to help bring your visions to life.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love being a musical service to others. Being able to help bring someone's vision to life is super fun and rewarding in itself.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Please give a song example if you can. It can be a YouTube link. This really helps to guide the provider in the right direction!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop, interface, headphones, SSD drive, and MIDI keyboard.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started music lessons with piano at age 3. During my middle school years, I joined choir and band while working through my horrible lyrical skills. Then, I decided to finally pursue music as my career around age 28. I've been at it for about 1 year now, but been producing seriously since January 2022.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would have to say that my style usually involves complex drum patterns, especially when it comes to hi hats. I love to use a variation of 16th and 32nd notes. My style also usually includes bright synths of some sort.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: It would definitely be Suga/Agust D from BTS. I admire Yoongi's work ethic, versatility, and passion that translates so well through his music. I actually have a translated quote of his as the background picture of my phone. It says "...do not let go of your dreams...". So whenever I'm feeling down or discouraged, I just look at my phone and I keep going.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Do not over compress your tracks. That sucks the life out of the dynamic versatility of your project.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Being that I'm a producer on Beatstars as well, I typically write of hip hop, R&B, and dark pop for that platform. In my own personal time, I venture off into producing music for retro video games and jazz pieces.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is asking good questions and being thorough. I am not shy when it comes to getting clarification on what is expected of me.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: It's usually taking a rough work tape (audio memo or melodic idea sung by the client), then turning it into a full professional instrumental. This includes the instrumental being mixed and mastered.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Kris Bradley (Produce Like A Boss CEO), Min Yoongi from BTS, and Alicia Keys.
