Interview with Patrick Vilbar
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I am very proud of my original band's first EP. I wrote 5 of 6 songs and I produced, played guitar, recorded, mixed and mastered the EP. I played many roles!
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I don't really know anybody else on here haha
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I enjoy the problem solving and finding what works best for any given project - whether it's the drum sound or the guitar tone, everything needs to work. My job is in getting the message across as musically and as clearly as possible
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: My customers usually ask when they could have their work done - I answer that I can definitely make a deadline
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I think the biggest misconception about what I do is that it's easy, or at least comes easily
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Some questions would be: What is the vibe? Do you have a guitar tone I can try emulating or expand upon? Do you believe in your song/songs?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My advice would be to find the best person for your project; not the highest rated person
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My EVH Wolfgang, a good amplifier, an SM57, an interface and my laptop - the musical possibilities are endless!!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: My career path is to produce, write and play guitar for my original band. I've been working on this project for about three years now.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would describe my style as very blues-derivative, but fresh. My goal is to always approach material with forward thinking - expanding on my personal tastes and musical choices while complimenting the music/material given.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would like to work with Jimmy Page; I believe he an underrated producer and would love to learn about his techniques and philosophies regarding production
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Capturing a good performance matters more than editing
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on Rock music
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is in guitar performance; I am a very experienced musician and am a well rounded guitarist! I am totally comfortable playing many genres of music.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical process involves learning a song inside and out to be able to perform on the given material. I prefer recording single takes (as if I were recording to tape) to achieve a more authentic and musical and human approach.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio setup consists of my MacBook Pro, my preferred DAW to work in is Logic Pro X and I am capable of recording electric, acoustic and bass. I implement many tools to capture my performances - such as my mic collection (Sennheiser e935, sE V7, Shure SM58/57 and a Rode NT1 as a room mic), Two-Notes CAB M+ and Guitar Amplifier Plug-Ins. My main recording amp is a Blackstar Artist 15 - a versatile tube combo amplifier! I listen on a pair of Tannoy's and have a versatile pedal board to help me get the given job done. I mix exclusively with plug-ins; most notably Waves and Logic stock.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common type of work I do is recording guitar parts (pre-written or original) for clients.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am developing my original band as the primary songwriter, guitarist, producer and mix & mastering engineer
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both! There's too much great stuff on both sides of the argument to ignore
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Deliver my best production, guitar, bass, drums, keys, etc! I promise to give you what you asked for and more!
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring my edge to each song I work with. Mainly working with my guitar, I bring a fresh approach to music I work on by having the guitar do a lot of the work for me; if it's appropriate. I think melodically and enjoy building music with harmony, catchy instrumental hooks and most importantly nailing the vibe. Everything I work on will have a tinge of Rock & Roll in its' DNA.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Jimmy Page as an all-around producer, writer and guitarist for Led Zeppelin. I love the sonic qualities of Arctic Monkeys, Royal Blood and Tame Impala

- The Last Armada - "Hannah"Aug 07, 2022
My band, 'The Last Armada' released our first single, "Hannah", on July 15th 2022. Heavily inspired by 50's Doo-Wop music, the song was crafted as a tribute to the early days of rock and roll. I utilized modern and classic recording and mixing techniques to achieve a "new, but familiar" sound. The single sets the stage for material to come.
