Interview with Michael McDowell [Dowell]

Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
Probably my set for EDCNY. It was a ton of fun to pick out my songs + a bunch that I really enjoy and then play them out live. That set is available to download on my soundcloud :)
What are you working on at the moment?
Just finished up an EP for a producer signed to Armada. Was a ton of fun to work on, and was not my original style.
Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
Not at the moment.
Analog or digital and why?
Digital. Its what I grew up on, and most digital VST's can outperform analog if you know what you're doing.
What's your 'promise' to your clients?
If you're unhappy, I will work until you are. And if not, I will give you a full refund!
What do you like most about your job?
Doing what I love everyday!
What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
Will a good mix and master increase the overall sound of my track? YES. A quality mix / master can turn a decent song into a really good song.
What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
That I only Mix & Master. I do mostly productions.
What questions do you ask prospective clients?
What artist are you going for? Song names? Genre?
What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
Come prepared with reference tracks, it makes this process faster and will help me create exactly what you're looking for!
If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
My widescreen monitor, My Monitors, My MacBook Pro, My Akai MPK261, and a pair of studio headphones.
What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
I started producing at age 16. Its been about 6+ years now, and since then I've gotten to produce for some BIG DJ's and play a few fantastic shows, including EDC.
How would you describe your style?
High energy, and new sounds.
Which artist would you like to work with and why?
Joyryde. He has a ton of experience, and his style is so nice.
Can you share one music production tip?
DON'T PUT REVERB ON SUB BASS. Lol.
What type of music do you usually work on?
Dance Music. House specifically.
What's your strongest skill?
My Productions. I love combining elements you would never normally hear in a track.
What do you bring to a song?
Cutting edge sound design, and a clean mix.
What's your typical work process?
Listen to a few reference tracks from my clients and go from there!
Tell us about your studio setup.
I have a studio built into the basement of my house, with top of the line Monitors and equipment.
What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
Mostly Joyryde & Herobust at the moment. Their music is super refreshing, and sounds super clean.
Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
Ghost Productions or Mixing and Mastering.
