Interview with Michael McDowell [Dowell]
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Probably my set for EDCNY. It was a ton of fun to pick out my songs + a bunch that I really enjoy and then play them out live. That set is available to download on my soundcloud :)
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Just finished up an EP for a producer signed to Armada. Was a ton of fun to work on, and was not my original style.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not at the moment.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital. Its what I grew up on, and most digital VST's can outperform analog if you know what you're doing.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: If you're unhappy, I will work until you are. And if not, I will give you a full refund!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Doing what I love everyday!
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Will a good mix and master increase the overall sound of my track? YES. A quality mix / master can turn a decent song into a really good song.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That I only Mix & Master. I do mostly productions.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What artist are you going for? Song names? Genre?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Come prepared with reference tracks, it makes this process faster and will help me create exactly what you're looking for!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My widescreen monitor, My Monitors, My MacBook Pro, My Akai MPK261, and a pair of studio headphones.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started producing at age 16. Its been about 6+ years now, and since then I've gotten to produce for some BIG DJ's and play a few fantastic shows, including EDC.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: High energy, and new sounds.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Joyryde. He has a ton of experience, and his style is so nice.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: DON'T PUT REVERB ON SUB BASS. Lol.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Dance Music. House specifically.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My Productions. I love combining elements you would never normally hear in a track.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Cutting edge sound design, and a clean mix.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Listen to a few reference tracks from my clients and go from there!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a studio built into the basement of my house, with top of the line Monitors and equipment.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Mostly Joyryde & Herobust at the moment. Their music is super refreshing, and sounds super clean.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Ghost Productions or Mixing and Mastering.
