Andy Kong on SoundBetter

I'm a San Francisco based producer, singer/songwriter, guitarist, vocalist & mixing engineer. I've generated over 50,000,000+ streams as a solo independent artist and had songs placed on major network television shows. My expertise is in bringing an organic edge to pop production. Check out my examples and let's make some magic together!

Hey friends – Andy here.

I'm a Music Producer & Artist currently residing in quiet Northern California. I've been working with other artists and on my own solo projects for over 15 years. I believe deeply that each song is unique and every aspect (songwriting, instrumentation, arrangement & production) has to come together holistically to maximize a song's impact.

My greatest strength is in taking a rough idea and turning it into a refined, professional record that connects with and moves listeners to their core. Every detail, every step of the way, I will give everything I've got to bring your project to vivid life and to reach its fullest potential.

I've worked with Andy on multiple songs over the years and he has been amazing every time. He somehow knows exactly where I want to hear the song go. A true pro and I can't wait to work with him again.

Interview with Andy Kong

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I'm especially proud of my "Westfalia" project. I wrote the tune in the back of an 86 van, recorded it on the road and then directed and released an epic 4 part docu-series/experimental meditation exploring the west coast in the back of that badboy.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Both. They're just tools to realize a creative vision.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I will give everything I've got to elevate your creative sonic vision.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: I love the process of bringing intangible ideas to life into physical things that really connect, inspire and move people on an emotional level.

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: What songs/artists are inspiring you and your project? How can I best use my skills to reach your creative vision?

  11. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  12. A: Ask a bunch of questions to make sure stylistically your vision aligns.

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: Acoustic Guitar, UAD Apollo, Sennheiser HD600 Headphones, Shure SM7B, Komplete S88 Keyboard

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: Music has been my path since I was 12 years old. I made my first demo on a standalone Boss BR-1180 back then and fell in love with songwriting and production from then on. So, technically I've been recording and releasing music for over 20 years... Professionally for 15. Started touring right out of college on with an album I recorded in my dorm room at UC Berkeley.

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: Organic Pop. That's the style I've spent years personally releasing, but incorporating it into other genres (Electronic, Hip-Hop etc...) has led to even more exciting and surprising results.

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: Make sure that the production exists to serve the song. Great production can absolutely elevate a song, but very rarely can it save a poorly written one.

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: Pop, Singer/Songwriter, Indie & Country

  23. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  24. A: Communication and visualizing the potential of a song/project and the steps to realize it.

  25. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  26. A: I bring a ton of experience as both an artist & producer in what really moves listeners.

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: Jacquire King and his grounded approach to production and mixing. James Blake for his elegant simplicity. Max Martin for his production magic. Van Morrison (Do I even need to explain?)
