David Goncalves on SoundBetter

Fresh and modern-sounding drums for all music genres!

Let's spice up your recordings with memorable and tasty drum grooves! I will record all kinds of drum parts for your song regardless of the genre. I specialize in RnB, Pop, Gospel, Afrobeat, Pop-Punk and EDM. However, over the years I've worked with all sorts of artists from different music genres, contributing to several releases worldwide, notably "Apaga a Luz" for the multiple platinum-awarded artist Michael Carreira, who has collaborated with international names like Enrique Iglesias on his song "Bailando".

I've been playing drums since the early age of 5 and graduated in London from the renowned BIMM University. Currently, aside from multiple studio sessions, I'm also touring with Michael Carreira and Soraia Tavares playing in front of thousands of people at big festivals like Rock in Rio Lisbon, coliseums and celebrity galas.

All tracks are delivered with high-quality sound and ready to mix without the need for further edits!

I will always work closely together with you to make sure the end result is the absolute best according to YOUR view.

Interview with David Goncalves

  1. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  2. A: What's the general idea that you have for the drum parts?

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: No preference really.

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: Being a musician isn't a real job.

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Try as much as possible to define exactly what is that you're looking for... like specific drum parts or even what kind of sound you want.

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: I would take a Kick drum, a Snare drum, Hit-Hats, a MacBook Pro and In-ears.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: If @stixxtaylor chops, @anderson._paak grooves, @els_drumsofficial afrobeat vibes meet Travis Barker's attitude. That's me!

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: It is hard to choose a specific artist, but I will put it like this... one that gets me touring worldwide!

  15. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  16. A: I've recently recorded with Michael Carreira, a highly renowned pop artist in Portugal. He's one of the best-selling artists in the country, having 9 certified platinum albums and making music with international celebrities like Henrique Iglesias. I was fortunate to record drums for his recent hit "Apaga a Luz".

  17. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  18. A: Apart from touring with both Mickael Carreira and Soraia Tavares, and playing percussion with multiple DJs at private events, I also work at Lisbon Sound Society studios doing multiple recording sessions.

  19. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  20. A: I know the guitarist João Miguel who has more than 389 5-star reviews, who's also part of Michael Carreira's band and being the one who has advised me to create a profile in SoundBetter.

  21. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  22. A: Being able to do what I love for a living.

  23. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  24. A: Q: What files do you need to get started? A: Usually just a WAV file of the track with or without any programmed drums and the BPM of the song.

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: I have been playing drums for more than 18 years.

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: Feel, taste and groove are my strongest skills as a drummer. No matter what you play, it has to feel good and fit the song.

  29. Q: What's your typical work process?

  30. A: I like to hear the song a few times first, whilst composing my drum parts. Once I know exactly what I'm playing then I move on to record my parts.

  31. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  32. A: Studio Setup: MacBook Pro, Logic Pro X, Tube-Tech Pre Amplifier, Apollo X8p, Apollo Twin, Focusrite Scarlett 18i20, Neumann KH120 II, Yamaha MSP10. Microphones: Roads NT5 MP, the t.bone RB 100, Sontronics Orpheus, Sennheiser MD 421 II, Shure SM57, Shure SM58, Shure SM7B, Audix D6, Slate ML-2, Slate ML-1, AKG D112, AKG C418. Drums Setup: Premier Artist Maple (10, 12, 14, 16, 22), Dw Drums Design Series (10, 12,16, 22), Dw Drums Performance Series (14), Multiple Zildjian Cymbals, Remo Drumheads and Vic Firth Drumsticks.

  33. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  34. A: My current main inspirations are Devon Taylor (Justin Bierbers drummer) and Anderson Paak.

  35. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  36. A: I work in my studio Monday through Friday doing multiple recording sessions.

  37. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  38. A: I promise to deliver professional recordings and to take working on your music very seriously. It will be of the utmost importance to me to elevate your track to the best of my abilities.

  39. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  40. A: Simplify your arrangement as much as possible- the best-sounding mixes are songs where everything has it's own space and the parts complement each other. Stacking a "wall of sound" of overdubs can lead to a cluttered mix where nothing can really shine in it's own space. Make each layer a vital component of the overall sound.

  41. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  42. A: I work with various styles and genres since being a session drummer is important to displaying versatility. Being knowledgeable of multiple genres helps me create distinctive and unique drum parts by implementing more than one style in my playing. But here are a few of the genres I like playing the most: - Pop - RnB - Afrobeat - Rap / Trap - DnB - House - EDM - Fusion - Prog - Metal - Rock - Funk

  43. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  44. A: As both a drummer and songwriter, I can approach the track from a songwriter's perspective along with the proficiency and knowhow of a professional drummer. Drum part construction is key for me but I also like to leave room for improvising and reacting to what I'm hearing in real time.
