Interview with Fabian Faupel for SAINT ROCK
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Pro Tools HD, Alesis speakers, Sonarworks plugins, Audio Technica Headphones, Neumann TLM 103. Universal Audio (1176 LN, Cambridge EQ etc..) and Waves Audio, plugins (Amplitude, Nicky Romero, Massive, Omnisphere, Vienna Orchestra, Kontakt Instruments, The Grand, Battery 4, GTR Amp, Reason, Melodyne, Autotune, Izotope Plugins and many more), diverse Fenders and Gibsons, Basses, Synthesizers and Keyboards.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Taylor Swift - because she has taken mainstream pop to a mature, elegant, classy, yet cool level /// Sigrid - She seems to have a very cool, fresh personality and great vocals. Love her sound and songs! /// David Guetta and Martin Solveig- because they are icons and a pioneers of the exciting melange of Dance, Pop with roots in the French Touch /// Britney Spears - because it's Britney! /// Simply Red - Still one of the most amazing soul vocals, would love to revamp his sound /// The Beatles - because they didn't take themselves too seriously and were extremely funny...and just crazy talented...obviously...
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mostly mainstream pop, with dance, rnb, indie, soul influences
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Love for the detail and the big picture itself. We believe a great sounding track is a mix of hundreds of sonic jewels (polished or not...depends on the style) where each detail must sound amazing by itself and every piece should have its place. However, ultimately, the best production is worth nothing if the concept of the song, the message, the melody and the lyrics are weak and don't stick out. We always pay attention that the same song can still touch you emotionally whether it is a full production, a stripped down, raw version, or a crazy remix in whatever style. A good song always cuts through everything!
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Paying attention to what the client asks for, but also offering him new ways he hasn't thought of. Technically spoken we'd say: writing hooks, melodies, arranging and mixing!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Max Martin, Dr. Luke, Brian Higgins, Gregg Alexander, Avicii, Mark Ronson, Calvin Harris, Clean Bandit
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: We mostly work on tailored productions for artists, we also do the songwriting for or with them. We're also specialized in remixes and mixing songs for different clients.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: detail loving, carefully executed european/american pop inspired by great, timeless, swedish songwriting and british nonchalance
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Creating a great backing track which puts something new to the table and then write a topline melody/lyrics with fresh hooks and new perspectives on universal topics.
