Interview with Steven Taft
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I'm proud of a Single I mixed from an Artist named Sar - Lay low the production was great, and a lot of the reviews were based on the mix sounding so polished and for it to be bedroom recorded vocals I knew I really perfected my craft.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm currently working on a single for an Artist named Brook$ Shotta.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I'm not sure but hopefully in the future I can get to know some fellow Engineers on here.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital because at the snap of a finger changes can be made and settings can be saved and recalled.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is to deliver the best sound for each and every song.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I like being able to hear so many Artists be vulnerable and make beautiful art and be the missing piece that makes the song exactly what they imagined.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: They usually ask me if the recording sounds ok, and the answer depends but I usually give them pointers on better recording techniques if needed.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception is anyone can do it well.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually ask if they have a specific vision for the song and if so, what direction would they like me to take it.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I would say the recording process is the most important get that right first!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: MacBook, Interface, Monitors, VT 7, VT 5
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: My Career path for the longest was Aspiring to be an Artist but I soon realized I loved what was going on behind the scenes to really make the song pop a lot more, I have been Mixing for about 2 years now.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style would be very creative and emotionally connected..
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would like to work with Drake because his production is so wide ranged.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Less is more.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on Hip Hop and R&B but I love Alternative music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My Strongest skill I think besides the obvious of making the song sound better is communication.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring to life what the Artist envisions his or her record to sound like without knowing exactly how to achieve it themselves. I also bring creative ideas that maybe weren't considered in the initial recording process and add a sheen and polish to the song while still maintaining the emotional feel fans yearn for.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My work process is once all files are received, I get to work immediately, I get everything balanced, then get out all creative ideas quickly, 9 times out of 10 our initial reaction to a song brings out important emotional elements that I want to highlight. Once my first pass is complete, I send the record back to the client and wait for the fire emojis.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I am Currently Working from Home I have Krk monitors along with Sony MDR Headphones, and I also reference on iPhone headphones and an Echo Dot Speaker along with an additional car test.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am a huge admirer of Manny Marroquin, Jaycen Joshua, and Josh Gudwin. They set the bar for what I look to provide each and every Artist I work with not only sonically but creatively.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I Provide Polished Radio Ready Mixes.
