Iván Mustapich on SoundBetter

Professional reggae drummer with Los Cafres, specializing in authentic Roots, Rockers, Dub and Dancehall drum tracks.

I'm a professional touring and studio drummer with Los Cafres, one of Argentina's most recognized reggae bands. I've spent years recording and performing reggae internationally, both in the studio and on stage.

I specialize in authentic Roots, Rockers, Dub and Dancehall drumming, focusing on feel, groove, dynamics and musicality. My goal is not just to record a technically clean drum track, but to make the drums feel like they belong in your song.

I can deliver clean multitracks for your own mix, or mix-ready drums if you prefer a finished sound. I work with carefully tuned professional drums, high-quality microphones, API and SSL preamps, and Antelope conversion.

Send me your song, reference tracks and any ideas you have for the drums, and I'll take care of the rest.

Interview with Iván Mustapich

  1. Q: What's your typical work process?

  2. A: I begin by discussing the song, references and the artist’s vision to understand exactly what the production needs. I then choose the appropriate drums, microphones and signal chain, record the performance with a strong focus on feel and groove, and carefully prepare the final tracks. Depending on the project, I deliver clean multitracks for the producer to mix or a fully processed drum mix stems. Communication and feedback are part of the process from start to finish.

  3. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  4. A: My studio is a drum-focused recording space designed around achieving professional, authentic reggae and roots drum sounds. I use a carefully selected collection of drums, microphones, preamps and analog outboard gear, including API and SSL preamps, to shape the sound from the source. I can deliver everything from clean, unprocessed multitracks for the producer to fully processed stereo drum mixes, depending on the project.

  5. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  6. A: I’m inspired by musicians and producers who put feel, groove and sound above everything else. Sly Dunbar, Carlton Barrett and Style Scott have been major influences on my approach to reggae drumming, while producers and engineers such as Lee “Scratch” Perry, King Tubby and Scientist have shaped the way I think about sound, space and rhythm.

  7. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  8. A: I most commonly work with artists and producers looking for authentic, professional reggae drums for their productions. I record the drums in my studio with a carefully selected collection of vintage-inspired drums, microphones, preamps and outboard gear, delivering a performance with the right feel, groove and sound for the song. I offer both stereo mixes and full multitrack stems, depending on the client's needs.
