Hello!

My name is Brandon Unis and I've been a mixer professionally for over 15 years. My specialty is anything you might consider pop - but I also work in Hip-Hop, R&B, Rock, Soul, Country, Jazz and more.

I love big drums, tight bass, crisp / present vocals and finding spacial clarity within a song. My goal is always to respect your vision and bring out the best in your track!

My approach is a blend of analog and digital in a way that allows for precise and quick recall - all the while taking advantage of the benefits outboard gear can provide. For example, every vocal I mix gets kissed by the world class and classic Neve 1073, EQP and Tube-Tech CL1B vocal chain. I'm also proud to say my mix bus contains 16(!) tubes provided by the Hazelrigg VLC equalizer and Manley Labs Vari-Mu. I find there's nothing else quite like it. Plus it's fun to use!

If you are looking for a mixer to take your song over the top, I would love to chat!

Send me a note through the contact button above.

From the first time I worked with Brandon, I was (and still am) fascinated with his effortless ability to create and produce music—everything he does is with much care and efficiency. Brandon produced my first track, and I simply could not have been happier with the final result, as he helped me craft a sound that truly felt like mine. I was so pleased with his work that I came back and produce 5 additional tracks with him. Brandon is organized, professional, and I'm confident that he will do his best to honour any project's vision. You will be thankful you have him on board for your project!

I've been working with Brandon since 2018, and he has been one of the best things to happen to my music. He nails the mix pretty much on the first pass every time with very minimal tweaks if not. He genuinely cares about the success of every project he works on no matter how big or small. I've since tried to deviate and use other mixers and it never comes close. Brandon would be a greta addition to any team if you're looking to have a fighting chance in the sea of music being released today.

Brandon is an unreal mixer, producer, and songwriter. I have collaborated with him numerous times over the past 5 years, and his work speaks for itself. His mixes are sonically outstanding, and he adapts his process to the genre and makes sure it competes at any level. Super nice dude, always hungry to learn and get better at his craft. Highly recommended, there's a reason he works with such high level artists!

Brandon Is amazing! Can't wait for my EP to be out. He co-wrote Mixed and produced this and he way exceeded expectations. His effectiveness and creativeness while working within my timeline was incredible. I feel lucky to have him take on my projects and getting to work with someone who has such a great diverse background is a privilege. At this point I really Can't imagine having anyone else do my mixing or production. He has done all of the JUNYOR tracks and prior to that he did the 4 minutes later EP and singles. There is a reason he has a gold record give this man 10 more!

I’ve worked with many mix engineers in my time and none come close to Brandon. I compose experimental electronic music and often there isn’t any specific music out there we can use as reference audio. Brandon has always been highly intuitive, very patient, and a trustworthy judge of every nuanced decision I make. His mix quality is the best I’ve ever had. Brandon is also highly organized, professional, and always good vibes. Great dude and a world class engineer.

Brandon is extremely professional, with tons of attention to detail and care for his work. The quality of his mixes are amazing and the turnaround to receiving them is fast! He is communicative, takes feedback greatly, and always ensures my satisfaction/vision for the song is met. I am super grateful to have met Brandon and will continue to work with him. I HIGHLY recommend working with him!

Interview with Brandon Unis

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Karl Wolf’s “The Export” EP. I co-wrote, engineered and mixed the whole thing with him. It’s lead single broke billboard top 50 and was certified gold in sales. I learned a lot in making that record and we’re great friends to this day !

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: The beauty of my job is it’s always different and I’m fortunate to have steady work. Most of the time I have 5 or more wildly different singles on the go and an album or two as well. I produce as well as mix so my plate stays very full. And I’m grateful for it!

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Andrew Goodwin - he’s a world class top liner and song writer, with a voice like no other. He’s a stand up dude as well. Good people are where it’s at!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both! Analog does things digital can’t and vice-versa! Running a vocal through my tube EQ and compressor then getting surgical in the box gets me the exact sound I love. I’ll also use outboard on the mix bus to add that special depth and weight that only real tubes can (in my humble opinion). Neither is better or worse. Just different !

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I won’t stop until you are happy!

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I get to work on so many different songs and genres and meet so many unique, amazing people, that every day is different and exciting.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Do you do spec mixes? My answer is always “it depends”. It depends how busy I am, what the “opportunity” is (is there a whole album on the table for example) how fast do you need it, are you trying out other mixers as well etc.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: I think it’s that rate is tied to the amount of time it takes to complete a mix and that’s just not the case. A mixer is bringing years of experience, taste, expertise, gear and more to the table :)

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What do you love about the song? What would you like to see “improved on” the most? Are there any songs out there that feel the way you want this one to feel? (References are not a bad thing!) what’s your ideal timeline so we can be sure to hit any deadlines etc.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Trust your gut when you reach out to new mixers. Ultimately we are here to bring your vision to life and make it fun and inspiring along the way. The right mixer will be excited by your song, easy to work with and passionate about taking it across the finish line. I pride myself on working without ego. The best results come when everyone involved feels comfortable making suggestions - there’s no such thing as a bad idea!

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Townsendlabs Sphere (emulation mic so it can record anything really well), My Neve 1073 DPX (stereo preamp and EQ in one unit), my Tube-tech CL1B as it’s an incredibly versatile compressor, my computer because without pro tools I can’t do much and my Focal Twin 6be monitors!

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started out making beats 20 years ago which lead to me going to school for production and engineering. I worked in audio post for 8 years as my day job and worked with recording artists at night (which was always my true passion) . I eventually left audio post to focus on production and mixing exclusively and I never looked back!

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Generally I would say I have a very clean yet dense approach to mixing. Even though I lean heavily into saturation (on direct elements) it’s done in a purposeful and transparent way. Often people hear a mix and say “I totally forget A, B and C were a part of this sing!”

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Sam Smith. His songs and voice are absolutely captivating. They are a beautiful blend of organic and synthetic elements. Simple, refined and impactful. Every instrument and vocal has its place and purpose!

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Never under estimate the power of the relationship between phase and low end. Sometimes simply inverting the phase on a kick drum will completely open up the bass on a track and allow it to breathe like never before!

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: “Pop” which is a very wide net to cast. Typically (but not always) it’s music with a lot of programmed elements like drums, synth, bass etc. but with organic instruments feathered in like acoustic guitar, keys and more. If it’s catchy and/or brings emotions to the surface, I’m into to it!

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Probably seeing / understanding the vision you have and knowing how to bring it to life. Mixing is a subjective process but the feelings you want your song to elicit are not. The mix should emphasize all of that and take it over the top!

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I pride myself on bringing size , body , width, clarity and presence to a song. Ultimately when you hear your mix I want your reaction to be “this sounds like the best possible version of its self and stays true to my vision”. Sometimes an artist wants me to get creative and really bring some “sauce” to the mix and other times it’s a less is more approach. I do whatever is necessary to achieve the desired end result! Ultimately my goal is to help listeners and fans connect with the song you worked so hard on.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: On a mix I always start gathering directional input from the artist / producer. Email, text, phone call - whichever! I’ll listen to the production / demo mix a few times over while setting up the stems for the mix and then I simply start! At that point I know how far along the song has been pushed and where it needs to go. What I do first will change almost every time.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My mix room is a hybrid analog / digital setup that allows me the best of both worlds. The efficiency and precision of working in the box all the while being able to send vocals or other key elements to some of the most sought after gear in the world like the Neve 1073 and Tube-Tech CL1B (which I love mixing vocals through!)

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I consider myself a “student of the game” and I’m always looking to those I admire for inspiration. Mixers / producers like Stargate, Josh Gudwin, Jon Castelli, Quincy Jones, Paul Epworth, Jimmy Napes and more. As well as artists consistently pushing the envelope like Sam Smith, Justin Bieber, Dua Lipa, The Weeknd, Harry Styles etc.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Most often I am brought onto a project to mix and take the song across the finish line! Sometimes this includes vocal editing, tuning, production additions and more.
