Interview with David Reyes

  1. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  2. A: I promise my clients that I will do the best I can with my knowledge and capabilities to bring their music to life.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: What I like most about my job is that it is my passion. And when you're passionate, it doesn't become a job to you anymore.

  5. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  6. A: Most of my clients ask me where do I get my creativity. My usual answer is that my creativity usually kicks in when I'm under pressure. I don't know if that's healthy, but it brings out the best in me.

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: I'm always open to work with any artist. I learn something new every time I collaborate with someone.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: When I'm working on a specific track, I usually listen to the demo again and again. And while I'm listening, I take down notes. Once I've got the idea, I start to layout the instruments that I'm going to use. After recording, I listen to the raw mix. Then I give it a day or two to rest my ears so that I can start fresh when I'm mixing and mastering. It's like painting an artwork. You don't want to rush it. You have to take it one step at a time with good precision until it's a masterpiece.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: Here in our country, there is that misconception that your skills in this field is a product of your talent. Although it is true that talent contributes, they don't consider the time, effort, and money you put in to get better.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: I usually ask them what their vision is for that certain project. What sound they're after, what vibe, and to what kind of audience is their target.

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: Make sure to have a clear vision of your desired end product. I'll do my best to interpret your vision.

  17. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  18. A: I've been doing this for as long as I can remember. I started very early. I even managed to get a degree in this field. It's not an easy path, but I'm still here cruising.

  19. Q: How would you describe your style?

  20. A: I guess my style is more vintage & old school. I guess that's why people say that most of my work has a nostalgic vibe.

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: I usually work on indie & pop music. I do dabble with psychedelic rock if I have the time.

  23. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  24. A: I guess being a multi-instrumentalist is one of my strongest skill. I usually hear the final product before it is being recorded.

  25. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  26. A: In most of my projects, I'm always told that I bring a nostalgic vibe to the final product. It's not my intention, but I guess I do it subconsciously. I think it's because of my influences. So in a way it's not just me but the people that influenced me as well.

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: My studio setup is simple. Since most of my projects are done remotely, I have a small bedroom studio here at home. I'm slowly accumulating gear as I go on. I do occasionally go to the studio from time to time if I need to.

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: I usually provide a full production demo for my clients. Once we're satisfied with the initial vibe, I then proceed to mixing and mastering.

  31. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  32. A: I guess the project that I'm most proud of is producing for Magna Fanta Kompyuter. Although I'm also a band member, it's the first project that I produced professionally. Working with Magna Fanta Kompyuter opened a lot of doors for me in my music production journey.

  33. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  34. A: I'm currently in the process of making my first EP.

  35. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  36. A: I'd say analog, but to be honest I mainly use digital nowadays. Analog can give a certain character to your tracks. And there's a tendency to have a better workflow when using analog. Although you can make your tracks sound like analog through digital, you'd be stuck in a loop looking for the right plugin to use.

  37. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  38. A: Mix with your ears not your eyes! I know there are rules in mixing & mastering, but at the end of the day you have to chase the sound that you're after and sometimes rules can restrict you from reaching that goal.
