Mark and Mike are so incredibly professional and kind. They offered great feedback and so much space for me to be able to do what my voice does best. They welcomed creative freedoms and also knew exactly what they wanted. The perfect clients to work with and would ABSOLUTELY work with them again. Such a pleasure and a breath of fresh air.
Interview with Windtree Theory Production
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: "Get Outta My Way" featuring Feiner was a joy to work on. Her voice can do just about anything and has so much character. The possibilities with such an "ingredient" were endless. Windtree Theory composed the music and lyrics and produced the song around Feiner's voice. https://open.spotify.com/track/5OghnhfxgiMKz1q9TzILbv?si=34f850666bc9422b
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: We released singles in June and July. We've got two more in mixing.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: We can only speak to the artists we've collaborated with thus far. Bobby John and LEX are phenomenal and professional vocalists.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Windtree Theory promises to tailor the production to YOU, and to make your talent pop.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: There's nothing better than completing a tangible product that did not previously exist and sharing it with the world.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: "What does it cost to do complete one song?" A: "That depends on whether you want live musicians or virtual production, as well as how many layers you want to add, i.e. background vocals, strings, horns, etc."
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: One misconception people have is that a live band will cost the same as virtual production. Involving more people always requires more funding.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What type of music do you listen to? If you could sound like anyone, who would it be? Can you share your five all-time favorite songs with us?
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: We do all sorts of diverse work, but the most common type is composing a song or set of songs for a talented vocalist. We also produce, track, mix and master songs for those coming in with completed compositions.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: A truly unique and polished project requires patience.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Computer with Logic Pro X, interface, piano, guitar, headphones. Assuming there's no electricity on said island, the guitar might need to be acoustic.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Individuals within the ranks of Windtree Theory range from having multiple music education degrees to self-taught to professional engineers and arrangers. While Windtree Theory was established in 2020, the individuals that comprise the team have been producing for 20 years, on average.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: We can be warm, acoustic and folky and, the next day, highly-produced, synthesized and electronic. Windtree Theory's resources draw from the worlds of rock, pop, jazz, funk and orchestral.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Charlie Puth seems to have a great style of music writing and producing. It would be interesting to combine our knowledge base and create music.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Trust your ears!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: You will notice from our musical samples that we are stylistically diverse in our abilities. We gravitate toward pop song form, but are able to incorporate the flavors of rock, jazz and dance music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Choosing the right harmony, melody and instrumentation - and song - to complement your voice.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: We bring an immense knowledge of (1) popular song forms of all styles and eras (2) how to make your particular talent the focal point of the project and (3) professional musical arrangements.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Typically, we have a phone or email conversation about the client's vision. This usually includes discussing their inspirations, vocal range and preferred sound palette, to name a few. We swap examples of previous work in order to become more intimate with the client. Then we produce a demo and revise until satisfaction.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: We have a dedicated studio space equipped with Logic Pro X, Focusrite 18i20 interface, keyboards, synthesizers, guitars, basses, pianos, percussion and any virtual studio technology (VST) you may need.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: We take inspiration for just about everyone who loves what they do, from electronic producers, to jazz improvisers, to rhythm guitarists, etc. We particularly gravitate toward original music.
