Interview with Valentino Torres

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I really enjoyed working on The Heartbreak EP for 42 Fredo. I made a majority of the beats, recorded the vocals, and mixed and mastered the whole project.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am working on songs for clients of my studio and also for the artists on my label 42 Records Label.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I promise 100% satisfaction in my jobs. I will treat every song and project in servitude to the vision of the artist in making sure it comes to life exactly how they imagined it.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: I love music, so in a way everyday I get to work on something that excites and challenges me.

  9. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  10. A: I get lots of questions around my turnaround times which is pretty short for many profiles on here, I only ask for 3 days. Also I get questions about how many revisions I offer, which is two.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: That you need the best and highest quality equipment in order to get a track that can connect with others. While better equipment can always help, its really the user of that equipment that is more important and critical to the sound.

  13. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  14. A: Andres Mayo is an incredible Mastering engineer that I have worked with over the years!

  15. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  16. A: I like both, so I say hybrid.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What vibe do you want me to achieve? Is there any specific effects or moments you want me to create when mixing and mastering. How can I best serve the track in getting it ready for release.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Just make sure to communicate with us! There are plenty of qualified providers on here and we are all trying to help your vision to come to life and the best way for that to happen is for you to connect with us and share your ideas and wants.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Laptop, Tlm-103, neve 1073 preamp, apollo twin x, electric guitar with cable.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I have always want to work on music as long as I can remember. I started with instruments when I was a kid, then in high school I learned about beat making and production. Since then my love for music has only grown.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Clean and transparent, as well as loud.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Gunna or Kodak Black, they just seem like very interesting and cool artists to work with.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Your ears are the most important tool for you to own.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Hip-hop or trap usually with the occasional latin or R&B song.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Ability to leave my ego at the door.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring over 5 years of experience, a dedication to music, and the ability to get a mix/master back to you in a timely manner and with great satisfaction.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: First thing I do when mixing is import all my stems into my broad template and get everything to an even balance. I then sit back and listen to the song, taking notes and trying to understand where the artist is going with the track. From there it is all about adding and taking away from tracks to create a well balanced mix. I add effects to help create a space and further the vibe. I tend to try to not add too much of my own personality to a track and rather let the artists ideas shine.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My studio setup is modest but powerful. I usually record vocals on my TLM-103 into my Apollo Twin X, which goes through the Unison preamp which I have UAD 1073 Neve inserted into. Then I record into Fl Studio on my Macbook Pro

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Some of my production inspirations are Dr. Dre, Metro Boomin, Nick Mira, and Kanye West.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: The most common work I do with artists in person is vocal recording and music production. However I offer all my clients mixing and mastering services as well.
