Gospel & Soulful Mix Master

Stoney Amos on SoundBetter

Advancing the Kingdom Sound, one mix at a time—specializing in gospel and praise & worship, and bringing that same emotional, vocal‑forward approach to R&B, pop, soul and inspirational music.

“The only limits are the ones you accept.”

Craig (Stoney Amos) is a Maryland-based mixing and mastering engineer and House of Worship technical consultant, serving gospel, praise & worship, inspirational, R&B, soul and pop artists. Whether it’s a church live record or a modern R&B/Pop single, I focus on clear, intentional vocals, exciting low end, and a mix that translates from earbuds to big speakers.

Artists and Producers value my organized workflow, transparent communication, and creative partnership—I treat every project like a release destined to inspire, not just another file in line.

Interview with Stoney Amos

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Most recently, it was a project that hadn't progressed to where the artist really wanted it to be. They didn't discover that until we starting conversing and connecting, to outline where their vision wanted the project to go. I didn't touch a fader or a plugin. Together, we outlined direction to the project. That was more impactful than the mix. That will be the most impactful (probably) when it comes time to mix and master.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I’m currently mixing and mastering songs for independent gospel and R&B artists, as well as polishing some AI‑assisted projects where artists need help turning rough, generated ideas into cohesive, release‑ready records. I’m also refining my portfolio and profiles to attract more of the vocal‑driven, faith‑centered music I love to work on.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Right now I’m focused on the work I do directly with my clients, but I’m always open to collaborating and building relationships with other professionals on the platform. As I connect with more providers whose work I trust, I’ll happily recommend them when it serves the client best.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Day‑to‑day, I work in digital because it gives my clients recall, flexibility, and the ability to keep projects moving quickly and affordably. I love the character of analog gear, but I choose tools based on what best serves the song and your timeline, not on nostalgia.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise is that I will treat your song with the same care and intentionality I give my own work. I’ll communicate clearly, respect your deadline and budget, and keep the focus on making your message and performance hit as strongly as possible.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love taking a song someone cares about—often something very personal or spiritual—and helping it sound the way it feels in their head and heart. Seeing an artist light up when they hear their music at that level never gets old.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: People often ask how many revisions they get and how fast I can turn a song around. My answer: we agree up front on a realistic deadline, I include a focused revision window to make sure you’re happy, and I communicate clearly at each step so there are no surprises.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest misconception is that mixing and mastering are just about making things louder or “fixing it in the mix.” In reality, the best results come from the source material itself: good arrangement, performance, and production decisions; my job is to reveal and enhance what’s already there, not magically replace it overnight.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I ask what success looks like for this song, which tracks or artists they reference, how and where the song will be used, and what deadline and budget we’re working with. I also ask if there’s anything about their rough mix they absolutely love or absolutely don’t want to lose.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Listen to their work on the same system you use every day and ask yourself if you feel something, not just if it sounds “loud.” Make sure they ask you questions, care about your references, and have a clear process for communication, revisions, and delivery dates.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: #1 My ears (hearing) means and matters more than any other piece of gear. A solid laptop with my DAW and plugins, my Apollo Twin X interface, one great large‑diaphragm condenser mic, my favorite pair of headphones, and a small MIDI keyboard for ideas. With that setup, I can record, produce, and mix almost anything, anywhere.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I actually have a pretty "interesting" background, one with an analytical skill set and that of a lifelong music lover and engineer. For the last 15+ years, I've had the pleasure of marrying both worlds together. It shows in how I approach records with both data‑driven attention to detail and a deep respect for feel and faith. I’ve been involved in music and audio for years, steadily building my skills in mixing, arrangement, and venue work, and now focus on serving artists through my spiritual music business and freelance engineering.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is clean, warm, and emotionally forward. I like mixes that feel like you’re standing in the room with the singer, with low‑end that supports the song, not overwhelms it, and top‑end that’s bright enough to feel modern but never harsh.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: If I had to pick one person, that would be you! The artist/producer taking the time to learn about me. I’d love to work with an artist who lives at the intersection of gospel and R&B—someone who cares deeply about lyrics and vocal delivery but also loves modern, punchy production. That combination lets me bring both my spiritual roots and my engineering brain to the table in a meaningful way.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Pick one “anchor” for each section of your song—the thing the listener should feel and focus on—and mix everything else around that. "Let the main thing be the main thing", a wise man once told me. When you decide that upfront, your EQ, compression, effects, and automation choices become way more intentional and your mix feels clearer and more emotional.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work on gospel, praise & worship, contemporary Christian, R&B, soul, and related pop styles, with some country and inspirational music in the mix. I also enjoy bringing polish to AI‑assisted or hybrid projects where a client needs help making technology‑generated ideas feel more human and cohesive.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is hearing what actually matters to the song and making decisions that serve that, not my ego. That shows up in vocal balance, low‑end control, and the way I use automation and dynamics to keep a listener engaged from the first bar to the last chorus.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring life! I listen to the artist/producer and I bring my A game to every mix to give it life. I bring clarity, emotion, and intention. My focus is making your vocal and message feel undeniable while giving the music enough width, depth, and punch to stand next to your favorite records.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I start by listening to your rough mix and references to understand the emotion and destination first. The source material matters! From there I organize the session, clean up any technical issues, shape the low‑end and vocals, and build the mix around the message of the song, sending you a first pass for honest feedback and then refining through a focused revision process.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I work out of a carefully tuned space built around a Mac Studio (M1), a Universal Audio Apollo Twin X, and Pro Tools as my main DAW. My monitoring is a calibrated Kali LP‑8 setup with room correction (ARC) in a treated mix room, so what I’m hearing translates accurately to cars, earbuds, and church systems.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: For me, even as a music lover, its the professionals that make the music come alive! Especially with gospel music, I’m inspired by engineers and producers who make vocals feel like a conversation and a moment of worship at the same time. I study music first, then mixers who balance musicality and impact—people who can make a choir feel huge, a lead vocal intimate, and still leave space for the band to live underneath.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Without question, mixing and mastering vocal‑forward songs for independent artists, especially gospel, praise & worship, R&B, and soul. Often times that means taking home‑ or church‑recorded sessions and turning them into polished, streaming‑ready records that feel bigger, clearer, and more emotional without losing the heart of the performance.
