Effy Gold on SoundBetter

Professional and versatile vocalist with a contralto range. I have a deep, dark, and rich tone, perfect for gothic, rock, and jazz - or for a pop song with a bit of a twist!

G'day, I'm Effy!

I'm an Australian-based singer/songwriter and composer who specialises in a big, rich sound. I've contributed vocals and lyrics to folk, pop, singer/songwriter, jazz, electronica, and rock/metal music over the last 16 years. I've played small, intimate jazz clubs down hidden alleyways, and I've played the o2 Academy in Birmingham, and I've loved every second of all of it!

Coming from a long line of musicians, music is in my blood, and I relish each performance. My favourite sound is anything gothic, but I take pride in my versatility as a vocalist, including singing in accents that fit the atmosphere of the song. I record my music in my home studio, where I have been steadily building up a collection of professional recording equipment.

If you like what you hear, throw me a message and let's work together!

I look forward to hearing from you.

Effy is a fantastic vocalist and a very capable songwriter. Her vocals were very pleasing and on point and I was very impressed with the creativity and originality in her music. Every component of the song came together and was very well executed. It was a pleasure producing her music. Looking forward to working on more great music with her!

Interview with Effy Gold

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: At the moment, I am working on a full-length album that I hope to release in Spring 2023. I can't share many details about it, but what I can say is that it is a blend of my love of fantasy books, classical music, and wonderfully heavy metal!

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: Typically, I work on folk and rock. I have a rich and warm voice that suits these genres well. My special love is for symphonic and gothic metal, as for me this genre bridges the gap between the sophistication of classical music and the raw emotion of rock music.

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: My strongest skill is my musicianship. I am more than just a singer. I started my journey as a pianist and violinist before moving onto guitar and bass - and this was before I turned my hand to vocals. I had a solid understanding of music theory, melody and cadence to support me as I studied (and fell in love with) singing. I understand the importance of balance in a song, and so I understand that the moments when you are not playing as as important as the moments you are playing; I understand songs as an entire composition and I am always aware of the big picture, especially when paying close attention to the tiny details.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: I have a poetic grasp of the English language. That, combined with my dark and warm voice, brings a rich, full sound to any song, adding depth and emotion guaranteed to engage the listener.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: Typically, when I work on a song, I lay down a melody and build chords around the melody - percussion comes next. Then I keep building layers and layers, creating a a mix that evokes emotion within me until I am ready to explode. Then, I stand up with a section of the song recording on a loop... and I adlib. I sing what comes to mind and I let unfiltered emotion flow from me. When I am satisfied with what I've recorded, I sit down and transcribe the lyrics. I change them up, replace words, improve the flow, structure, and rhymes. This process is repeated until every section of the song is written. Finally, I go in and record take after take of the final vocal until I have something I am proud of. Due to this way of working in my own music, I am adept at developing vocal melodies and singing over tracks where the composition has already been written and/or recorded. That said, I sometimes do start with lyrics and vocal melody, and I find this to be a nice change of pace, so don't feel dissuaded if you have yet to produce your composition and are seeking vocals or lyrics first.

  11. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  12. A: Most commonly, I am asked to add vocals to songs that exist. Often, my clients have an idea of what they want the song to be about, but they don't have the lyrics yet and I am only too happy to help them.
