Songwriter and Music Producer

Kamau Wilson on SoundBetter

I am a Songwriter with 8+ years of experience. I want to treat your music with care and respect. Songwriting is a very intimate process for me, and I will do whatever I can to ensure that the words that I write will connect your voice and story to the hearts and souls of the masses. I want to help you create music that will make you a legend.

About me: Music has been my love since I was a child. I was a school "Band Geek" who played the Trombone. Since those days, I have become a Self-Taught Singer, Rapper, Songwriter/Composer, Multi-Instrumentalist (Guitar, Piano, Drums/Percussion, Keyboards/Synthesizers, Drum Machine) Record Producer, and Audio Engineer. Songwriting and Music Production are my passions, and whatever your genre may be: Pop, Hip-Hop/Rap, Alternative, Jazz etc. I will help you take your song from just an idea, to the hearts and ears of the world.

My Services:
Option 1- I will write Lyrics to the Instrumental track that you provide
Option 2- I will write Lyrics and an original Melody to the Instrumental track that you provide
Option 3- I will create a Demo song (Instrumental, Lyrics, Melody) with Recorded and Mixed "Reference" Vocals

Would love to hear from you. Click the contact button above to get in touch.

Interview with Kamau Wilson

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: I am new here, but, hopefully soon.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: I promise that if you work with me, I will treat your creative ideas with respect. I love Songwriting and Music Production and I promise that I will help you write something that will make you happy

  5. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  6. A: Do I own the rights to the song? -Yes, you own full rights to the song! All that I ask, is that if you are releasing the song for commercial release, that I am properly credited for my contributions and the songwriting and publishing "splits" are 50/50 so that I can receive royalties. Do you belong to a Performance Rights Organization (PRO) -Yes! I am a registered Songwriter with a US based PRO. If you would like to know the specific organization that I am registered with, you may ask me! How long have you been writing songs? -I have been seriously writing songs for 8 years. I don't count the 7 or so years before that, when I would write (embarrassingly terrible) Rap lines whenever "inspiration" struck :^) What Genre(s) do you work in? -I would love to write Lyrics for any Genre you'd like! Pop, Hip-Hop/Rap, R&B, Jazz, Electronic, Rock, Alternative, Dance, Afrobeats, Reggae, etc. I love writing and listening to everything! Can we write the song together? -Yes, we can! Co-writing is one of the best parts of songwriting, and with your video conferencing application of choice (Zoom, FaceTime, Skype, etc.) it will be easy for us to write together. Do you provide Demo tracks? -For "Option" 1 and 2, I will provide recorded vocals of the lyrics and melody I have written over the Instrumental track that your provide. For "Option 3", those vocals will be over either the Instrumental that you provide, or that I have created for you. What is an "Instrumental Track"? -An Instrumental Track is the music behind the vocals. It can be Drums, Piano Synthesizers, Violins, anything! What I am asking you to provide can be basic (humming, piano, guitar) or a full production with multiple instruments. I can create this for you if you choose "Option 3." What if I want more than a "Demo" Song? -If you would like a "Commercial Ready Instrumental" that contains my mixed "reference" vocals, we can discuss your needs further.

  7. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  8. A: My own personal Debut Single. I did the entire process from producing/composing, writing, recording, mixing, mastering, cover art creation, and distribution and marketing. It was hard work, but it showed me that its possible to get my music out there all alone (although I know having a full team is my goal).

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: A little Jazz inspired, mixed with Michael Jackson, mixed with Futuristic ambiance, mixed with Rap, mixed with Motown Soul, mixed with Rock, mixed with Classical.

  11. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  12. A: Writing song, making instrumentals, and mixing my 2nd Single for my own release.

  13. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  14. A: ANALOG. Although I have grown up in the Digital Era, the songs that I truly hold near and dear to my heart, were recorded Analog. Also, I love playing real instruments like Guitar, Piano, etc. I'm an Analog kind of guy beyond Music as well, I still love writing by hand, drawing on paper, reading physical books, etc.

  15. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  16. A: That I get to have the perfect balance between being an Artist/Creative and an Entrepreneur.

  17. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  18. A: That writing songs (and anything music related, really) is something that you're born with and it can't be learned. I learned the craft of Songwriting, sure I had natural inclination towards the DESIRE to write, but I had to learn the actual craft of Songwriting. Also, something that REALLY MAKES ME ANGRY, that Songwriting is not "real work." THAT IS BLASPHEMY!

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: -Do you have a completed Instrumental track that you can provide me with? (This is what I will use to write) -What Genre is your song going to be? -Do you have some lyrics already written that you would like me to work from? -What is the general subject/concept/theme that your song will be about? -Do you want your song to contain Explicit lyrics /or Explicit subject matter?

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: I'm just a normal guy who loves Music. Songwriting is my way to tell stories, both personal stories, or completely fictional. I would love to work with you and create a story that you can be proud of.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I graduated from University with a degree in Business Administration. I Double-Majored in Entrepreneurship and Human Resource Management. I got out and realized how badly I missed music (I was in band throughout Elementary and High School.) I had been writing small verses here and there on the weekends while at University, but never really did it consistently. Then when I was out I decided I want to teach myself anything and everything that could help me turn Music into my full-time career. It's going on 8 years since I graduated, and I have now reached the point where I know that I will make this happen.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: Songwriting- Lyrics/Top-line(Intro/Outro, Verse, Pre-Chorus, Chorus, Hook, Bridge), Original Melody Vocal Recording- "Reference" Vocals Music Production- Original Instrumentation, Demo Instrumental Mixing- Mixing the Instrumental and Vocals

  27. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  28. A: Acoustic Guitar, Grand Piano, Tascam Portastudio 424 MkIII 4-track Cassette Tape Recorder, Fountain Pen, blank Notebook.

  29. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  30. A: Drake. I just love his versatility as an artist, his personality, and the fact the THE MAN LITERALLY CANNOT LOSE!

  31. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  32. A: Produce with Mixing in mind. Meaning, don't record everything at 0db, lower your levels.Use EQ, light Compression, Effects, Automation, etc. Essentially make it so that come time for Mixing, it will be more about small additions, rather than subtraction.

  33. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  34. A: Pop, Hip-Hop/Rap, R&B.

  35. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  36. A: Writing Song Lyrics and Melodies.

  37. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  38. A: An understanding of what makes people want to come back to the song over and over. Be it the melody or the lyrics, or the instrumentation, I'm obsessed with discovering what makes people hooked, no pun intended, to a song.

  39. Q: What's your typical work process?

  40. A: It varies. Usually, I create the instrumental first and write lyrics to it, but I have also had times where I create from a lyric or melody idea that was in my head. It depends on the day really. I don't like to stick to one thing, because my mid always changes. Typical artist answer, I KNOW!

  41. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  42. A: 100% in the box. I have my laptop, interface, and microphone for recording vocals. All instrumentation is done with my 49 key MIDI keyboard, and Logic Pro X is my DAW of choice... Don't worry I have a few plugins that aren't stock ;^)

  43. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  44. A: Michael Jackson Bob Marley Tupac Stevie Wonder Sam Cooke Marvin Gaye Prince Pharrell Williams Kanye West Jay-Z Nas The Notorious B.I.G Lil Wayne Lauryn Hill Erykah Badu The Weeknd Kendrick Lamar J. Cole Drake FKA Twigs Sevdaliza Bjork Frank Ocean Gallant Sampha Blood Orange James Blake Bruno Mars Adele A$AP Rocky
