Interview with Aki Bergen
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I always worked on many project so it still is. Keep mixing for many electronic producers almost every day and producing few selected and outstanding music albums for singers and musicians as well.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I can work with analogue and digital equally. There's no better, just a matter of taste. The most of the time I like to combine them in order to get best from the both.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise you won't leave without a full and unconditional satisfaction. I'll do my best to achieve the expected outcome and fulfill all of yours musical needs.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The Music has been preserving human beings alive and happy since forever. It's a godsend. It also creates beautiful interactions and connects people. This is just priceless.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Do my tracks will sound great after mixing/mastering? They will. It is as simple as that. My job is to bring the magic to your music production and make it ready for radios, streaming platforms and any digital and analogue devices.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: A good records isn't just something that have been signed by a record label. A good record is something that can please your ears and make your blood running, it needs great performances, cohesion between elements, separation, dynamic, a proper stereo field, depth and warmth. Sometimes it's not easy to get them all but with the right people around, you definitely can. Making music is a set of many factors.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I'll ask about their expectations first. Then I'll have a listen to their songs and small talk about which artists they like. To me it's very important to get to better know who I'm going to work for.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: You must love your music at first. If you aren't completely convinced with your production then, you may need to take a step back before hiring myself, but if you believe in your music I'm your man and will treat your tracks as they were mine. I'd say produce you track like nobody else will ever work on it anymore and mix your track like nobody else will ever work on it anymore. Do the best on every single step and when it comes to me, I'll do it again.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop, AKG K701, Midi Keyboard, Antelope Audio Pure 2, Genelec 8351A. Now we only need to find the switchboard!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I am very versatile. I can work on any kind of tracks focusing on the final result and giving you the chance to make any changes you need.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: There are plenty of outstanding artists out there, if I could I'd work with them all! When the music is great, you can count on me.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Experience and patience. I am confident to be able to help you out. No matter how long does it take, if we work together, we win.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I grew up with Depeche Mode, Massive Attack, David Bowie , The Underworld and Chemical Brothers just to name a few.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Production, Mixing and Mastering. I can assist you in each step or just in one or two of them depending on your professional requirement.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I've recently produced and mixed a soundtrack for an Italian movie which will be out on November the 30th. I also produced and mixed a brand-new project called "C3dric" which has been signed under Sony Music. I had much fun working on this one.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Krysta Youngs, Julia A. Ross. They're both amazing singers, very professional and super skilled!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I made my first record in 1997 so it's been 20 years now! I've been very lucky and grateful to have met the right people who helped me out what being a music producer really is. I studied a lot and still do, trying to increase my knowledges and skills every day of my life.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Teamwork is the key. Making music is such a bless so what's best than sharing it with the people you love to work with? I always make my assistants and colleagues being involved in my new projects and ideas. When you are able to build up a great team, your songs shall benefit. Guaranteed!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, Electronic, EDM, House, Techno, Dubstep, Soulful House, Deep House.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I'll bring my professional skills and 20 years of experience in the music business as music producer, remixer, mixing and mastering engineer. I've had the fortunate chance to work with talented artists and musicians rather then famous DJs and producers, too. I'll let the music and the results I've achieved speak for myself.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I do love listening to the rough mix and references as well so I can precisely gain an insight into what's the goal we must achieve with your song. I let the flow go, feeling the vibe of your music and see how my experience can bring your track to an upper level. I'll be constantly keep in touch with the artist so we can follow together the whole process, keeping the original vision focused and make it sounds perfect for radio stations and clubbing purpose.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: UAD Apollo Quad, Dangerous Convert-8, Dangerous Music 2-Bus, Antelope Pure, Dangerous Source DAC, 2x EQP-WA, SSL Bus Compressor, 2x LN1176 Rev. A. I have access to all of the best digital plugins in the biz and will be able to work both In-The-Box or on an Hybrid Analogue-Digital system either.
