Interview with Tone Freak Music

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Both... they each have their merits. To lock yourself into one or the other creates missed opportunities to create an amazing part for a song or an entire piece of music. Take advantage of all analog and digital has to offer.

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: How can I make what you do easier and help create the best representation of you and your music?

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: Don't just read about the provider because there is only so much text can reveal. I know time is precious, but you end up saving time by actually having a video or phone conversation with the provider.

  7. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  8. A: Keyboard, computer, interface, guitar and headphones.

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: Chameleon. I immerse myself in the style of music the client wants. Now, I won't be writing classical pieces for an orchestra, but when it comes to popular music, I can mold myself into any particular style of music.

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: Currently, the Cyrus sisters. Either one. I think they have a strong sense of themselves and they have amazing voices. I'd love to bring their stories to life through music.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: I mentioned this earlier, but it bears repeating... I'm a great listener. I want to bring out the best for the client, which requires putting your ego aside and working hard at meeting the client's vision.

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: Rock, Hip Hop/Rap beats, EDM, and Pop Punk speak to me the loudest, although I can write and play in just about any genre of music. Being a fan of all sorts of artists has enabled me to be a chameleon of music.

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: Listening to the client by far represents my priority to the project. I can give my recommendation, but only if called upon to do so. There are a lot of musicians that are amazing, but better to be very proficient at creating a piece to meet the clients expectations and to make the entire process easy.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: I have a strong sense of melody and song structure that pulls that listener along. Little parts in the background that if isolated, it might not amount to much, but as a part of the song, it could very well be the glue that pulls everything together.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: I start the process with the client. Zoom meeting to match the face with the name and getting to know each other in and out of the music space. If it's a song creation, I'd like to get examples of songs and artists, which helps me create a piece or part that meets the clients expectations. Once I have all those inputs, I quickly get started.

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: Optimizing efficiency best described my setup. Templates within my DAW allow me to immediately start a session. I have all the sound generators under the sun, including many from Waves, Plugin Alliance, Native Instruments, Eventide, TC Electronic, Toontrack, and many more. Mics from Rode, AKG, Shure, and a host of others are positioned with arms reach. James Tyler, Fender, Epiphone and Music Man all sit in my guitar stable. Arturia, Akai, Rupert Neve, Audient, Sony and Beyerdynamic all have a home in my studio. But the best piece of gear I have is my ears.

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: My music inspirations come from very diverse backgrounds. James Newton Howard composes wonderful pieces for movies. I absolutely love Dann Huff as a producer and especially his guitar playing. 40 and Dr. Dre immediately come to mind in the world of Hip Hop and beats creation. Diane Warren heavily influences how I approach lyrics. Kevin Gilbert, a relatively unknown, showed me how taking unconventional approached to music results in amazing results. There are just too many to mention here.

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: I'm a multi-instrumentalist, which helps me become a chameleon of music. I can write beats, pop punk, pop rock, EDM, and hard rock. If the client needs a music bed to sing or rap on, I can create it, mixed and mastered.
