Interview with Tresto
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both are essential!
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Go with your gut feeling...
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A powerful computer, an AKG 414 (multipurpose) mic, good interface, good mic pre, comfortable chair.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been a working drummer/percussionist, band manager, band leader and music educator for my adult life When I was in the studio tracking drums for various sessions. I was typically the 1st person at the studio and the last to leave. This due to my willingness to learn as much as I could about recording and producing music. I worked for years to continue this passion and have been able to build a modest studio and continue to make a living out of music.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Hmmmm... an organised mixed bag.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: The next artist that has something special!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Capture the sounds you are going for. Just because we can edit and manipulate everything nowadays, it's common to think "we can fix that later".
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Soulful, funky, groove or beat based tracks. From down tempo to funky house.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Bringing people and musical elements together.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My ears are I guess everyones best asset for music.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Find a vibe in a groove, work out some options for changes. Melodic ideas on top. Structure. Lyrics/topline. Build sonic palate with soft instruments and track live elements.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a broad selection of outboard equipment including SSL, Neve, Avalon, Universal Audio and API. Some great vintage reverb/delay units including Ursa Space Station and Roland RE-201. Vintage Rhodes, Clavinet, Vocoder Roland SH2 & Juno 60 and various modern synths including Moog. I have a solid mic cabinet with plenty of options for Vocals, Horns, Percussion, Drums and cabinets. 2 isolated tracking rooms and a main multipurpose mix room.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Kaytranada, Young Franco, Josh Gudwin, Ian Kirkpatrick
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Vocal producing, recording, editing, track production, mixing, live drum/percussion tracks.
