Tom Dissan on SoundBetter

I’m a music producer, composer, and creative director who loves bringing my own style and energy into every project — blending hip hop, EDM, pop, and Latin rhythms like bachata, merengue, and salsa to create music that feels fresh, soulful, and real.

I’m Tomas Rodriguez (Tom Dissan) music producer, composer, and creative director from Medellín, Colombia. My greatest passion is transforming emotions and stories into Music — taking an idea and turning it into something people can truly feel.
I love blending modern sounds like Hip Hop, EDM, and Pop with the soul of Latin music — bachata, merengue, salsa — creating a unique balance between the traditional and the modern. That mix has become my creative identity: music that feels new, but still has heart and depth.
Over the years, I’ve worked with artists and brands from Latin America, Europe, and the U.S., collaborating on projects that range from singles and albums to commercial campaigns and audiovisual productions. What I enjoy most is being able to bring my artistic and musical style into each project — helping it reach its full creative potential.
When I take on a project, I don’t just produce a song. I dive into its essence, shape its energy, and bring it to life with purpose. My goal is always the same: to create art that feels real, honest, and powerful.
If you’re looking for someone who can understand your vision and turn it into sound that truly connects — let’s create something amazing together.

Interview with Tom Dissan

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One of my favorite projects was a collaboration that fused salsa and modern pop elements. I was in charge of production, composition, and creative direction. What made it special was how organic it felt — we built every sound from scratch, capturing that real, live energy and blending it with a fresh modern edge.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I’m currently producing several Latin fusion projects that mix modern pop and urban sounds with traditional instruments and rhythms — exploring how to bring new life to Latin roots.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I’m building new connections here, but I’m always open to collaborating with talented people who share the same passion and respect for the music.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. I love the warmth and soul of analog gear, especially tube mics and pedals, but I also embrace the freedom and precision that digital tools bring. The magic happens when you blend both worlds.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: To give everything to the project — my creativity, my energy, and my full attention. I’ll treat every song as if it were my own and won’t stop until it reaches its highest artistic potential.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The moment when a song finally “breathes” — when the emotion, the sound, and the story connect perfectly. That feeling of knowing we created something real, something that moves people, is what drives me every day.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: They often ask how I can help their song stand out. My answer is simple: by being honest with the art. I don’t try to make a song fit into trends — I focus on its essence and make it shine in the most authentic way possible.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That being a producer is just about mixing sounds or making beats. Production is about emotion, storytelling, and vision — it’s about understanding an artist deeply and helping them bring their truth to life through sound.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I like to start by asking what inspired their song — what story or feeling they want to express. Then I ask what references or artists they connect with, and what they imagine their sound becoming. These questions help me understand not just the technical side, but the emotional direction of the project.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Take the time to really understand what you’re looking for — don’t just chase fame or a big name. Find someone who truly connects with your vision and can bring something meaningful to your song. Music is collaborative; no one is more important than the song itself. Sit down together, study the direction you want to take, and build something honest and lasting.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: If I were on a desert island, I’d take a guitar, my laptop, a good microphone, a solid audio interface, and a pair of high-quality headphones — enough to keep creating music anywhere, no matter the conditions.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I’ve been in music for over 15 years. I started as a musician, playing wind and percussion instruments, then moved into electronic music production and DJing. Eventually, I found my true place in music production — especially within Latin genres like reggaeton, salsa, and merengue — and I’ve focused on blending those roots with modern pop and other contemporary sounds to create something fresh and unique.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is quite melodic and always centered around emotion. I’m driven by melodies that make you feel something deep — often a touch of melancholy, nostalgia, or that kind of powerful emotion you can feel in your body. But I also love channeling that same energy into something vibrant and full of movement when the song calls for it.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I’d love to work with Carin León because he knows how to blend the new with the classic in Latin music, creating something that feels both authentic and fresh. I’d also love to collaborate with The Weeknd, because he’s fearless when it comes to exploring new sounds and never limits himself — that kind of creative freedom really inspires me.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: The most important advice I can give about music production is to let go of ego and embrace teamwork. Every role in a project adds its own magic when guided by a clear direction. Focus on what’s essential — that’s where the real art lives. In music, sometimes less truly is more.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I don’t focus on just one genre — my work is centered around modern music. Today, artists love blending styles, and that’s exactly where I feel at home. I constantly explore and fuse genres, always keeping a commercial and distribution-ready sound in mind. Whether it’s pop, urban, or experimental, I adapt to create music that feels current and authentic.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is understanding the musical and artistic concept behind a project and translating it into sound. I specialize in musical and creative direction, shaping the identity of a song from its core idea — through sound creation, recording, and production — to bring the artist’s vision to life in a powerful and authentic way.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: My main philosophy is to make every song feel bigger and more alive — to help it reach its full emotional and artistic potential. Technically, I contribute through recording, sound production, sound design, structure, and arrangements, adding creative touches that give the track its own identity and depth. My goal is always to enhance the artist’s vision and make the music truly connect.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I have different workflows depending on what each project needs, but I always start by listening deeply to the artist — understanding their story, feelings, and vision. From there, I dive into musical references, study similar sounds, and explore different creative directions. Once I connect with the concept, I start building the production step by step — from sound design and melodies to structure and emotion — making sure everything feels authentic and aligned with the artist’s essence.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My studio is built to create music anywhere inspiration strikes. I use a UAD Apollo Twin for pristine sound, Arturia synths, and an Akai drum machine for groove and texture. I work with a mix of tube, dynamic, and condenser microphones, plus pedals and FX chains that bring warmth and character to every take. Loaded with powerful VSTs and sound libraries, my setup lets me craft anything—from an intimate vocal to a full production—wherever creativity happens. It’s a space designed for flexibility, flow, and pure sonic exploration.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’m inspired by Pharrell Williams for his timeless creativity and versatility, Finneas for the intimacy and detail in his productions, Mauricio Rengifo for his ability to craft modern Latin hits, The Weeknd for his atmosphere and emotion, and Carin León for the way he blends tradition with a fresh, global sound.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Most of my work revolves around full music production — from shaping the sonic concept and writing lyrics and melodies, to providing creative direction that helps define an authentic and professional sound. I focus on turning ideas and emotions into songs that truly connect, paying attention to every detail, vibe, and feeling the artist wants to express.
