Levi Szendro on SoundBetter

I play drums on Straylings past and current albums "Wild Medicine" (Deadpan Records) with latest singles including "Velvet Covered Hills", "Shatter" and "The Great Divide". Furthermore, Co-written Hannah and the Heartbreak album "Open Heart Surgery" (All The Cats Recordings) where I also played drums, percussion and piano.

Picking up sticks at the age of 6 and by the age of 10 I was lucky enough to get my first drum kit. At that time I was studying classical piano, as well as drums and didn’t stop ever since, having graduated in both Classical Percussion in Austria and Contemporary Music Production and Drums in LCCM London. During that time I was fortunate to have consistent coaching from true masters such as Pete Zeldman, Richard Brook, and Bryan McLellan. From this point forward I was frequently hired as a session drummer and visited the vast majority of recording studios in London, having also done a US East coast tour with the musical Progy and Bess.

Currently I am working with a UK based super duo “Straylings”, laying down drum tracks for their upcoming new album. I have been a recurring session drummer for the band, having worked with them for over 8 years.

To me the sound of the drums is very important, and is often underestimated and overlooked. My approach combines a somewhat minimalistic style of playing aimed to purely lift the artist’s vision and feel. The sound I produce is the result of my thoughtfully built recording studio which has a natural and well balanced sound environment specifically designed for drum recordings.

Levi is not only a seriously professional and creative drummer, but a true gentleman. He's a team player, he'll go far beyond what has been agreed to deliver all he's got in every aspect of the project. We became good friends from our time working together and I blindly recommend him for anything.

Levi’s drumming truly is unsurpassed - his timing and musicality on the kit exceeds any other drummer I have come across. His playing always adds huge ‘feel’ to any track we have worked on with him. Levi is also a pleasure to spend time and work with, highly professional and always a positive energy in the studio - always striving to achieve the best. Without question one of the best drummers around. I would highly recommend Levi for any project.

Levi is without a doubt the best drummer I have worked with. His input in the creative process is invaluable and his knowledge of all things percussion and the recording techniques thereof is second to none. He is a likeable and professional character who I have no hesitation at all in recommending for your project.

Interview with Levi Szendro

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: Let's face it, recording the drums is one the most difficult process for songwriters for many known reasons. If you are struggling with drum takes/sound for your projects, 20 odd microphones and heaps of plug-in's most likely will not solve your problem. You need to go back to the core and find a drummer who understand his or her instruments, the tuning and the way how drums behave in certain situations. You could use 1 single mic and get a better or even a mind-blowing result! Its not a new thing, has been proven decades ago but some people tend to forget this for some reason.

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: I am usually humble but here is one: I was lucky enough recording drums for a session with producer Cam Blackwood (btw a wonderful guy!) in London few years back. I did overhear a comment which warmed my heart: "Levi really learned how to play the drums!" The session went very well for a "singer songwriter."

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: Straylings up coming album and singles for 2022.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: I will bring you real feel and the most pleasant live drum sound where you hear the drums sing.

  9. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  10. A: The most common type of work I get a call for is tracking drums and live shows, however lately more keen focusing on studio work.
