Karl Anderson on SoundBetter

I'm a producer, mixer and songwriter with millions of streams. My songs have been featured in uses by NFL, ABC, Showtime, Netflix, JEEP and many more. My productions have garnered millions of streams. I love hard-hitting, cinematic pop (Imagine Dragons) as well as pop and pop-country. I'm a multi-instrumentalist with a keys specialty.

Hi! My name is Karl Anderson and I've been producing, mixing, and songwriting for over 15 years. I spent the first chunk of my late teens and early adult years touring the country in bands playing keys, bass and guitar. I began to fall in love with the production/studio side of music-making and decided to shift my focus entirely to that. I am a published artist and I write songs cinematic rock under a pseudonym called The Hvnter. My songs have been in all manner of film and tv productions including Super Bowl LVIII, Lucifer, Shameless, JEEP, Power, UFC, and many others. I also produce tracks for other artists with a focus on pop/indie/pop-country/indie rock/alternative. I'm a multi-instrumentalist and often perform all tracks for artists that I produce.

My goal as a producer is take an artist's vision and elevate it to a place that translates to the largest audience possible. Great arrangement is key and I always expect to work with the building blocks of a song to ensure that it can reach its highest potential.

Interview with Karl Anderson

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Several songs that I've written, recorded (all instruments and vocals), produced, mixed, and mastered have been used in all kinds of shows and commercials. One particular song was used during Super Bowl LVII. That was pretty rad.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: I mix in the box because it saves time and it sounds great. I do, however, own a large collection of analog synths and pedal. My main studio also has a large selection of analog gear.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I promise to always bring my best to each production I work on- whether that's mixing, producing, keys, guitars, vocal tuning- everything.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: Working on different songs all the time.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: That it's easy! Great productions and mixes are often a battle. They don't all just happen. It takes hard work and experience to bring out the best in a song.

  11. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  12. A: Listen to examples of their work!

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: Korg Prologue 16, Arturia Keylab, vocal mic, Telecaster, Mac with Logic/Pro Tools

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: I started out playing in bands after high school. I traveled the US going that for several years until I started getting into songwriting and production. Once that bug bit me I was hooked. I've been doing it for almost 15 years now.

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: Hard hitting, energetic, fun, detailed

  19. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  20. A: I would love to work with Ryan Tedder...just to learn.

  21. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  22. A: Transitions from section to section are often overlooked. The way a song moves from part to part is vital in holding the listeners attention.

  23. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  24. A: I work on a wide variety, but I love pop, edm, pop country, rock, alternative.

  25. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  26. A: My strongest skill is knowing how to bring the best out of any song.

  27. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  28. A: I bring top level production, sonic excellence and great vibes to the tracks I produce. I know how to make tracks hit hard and I know how to capture subtle and nuance in music production.

  29. Q: What's your typical work process?

  30. A: The song is everything. If the song arrangement isn't the best it can be then the entire production will suffer. When possible I try to catch arrangement issues prior to production so that any needed changes can be made. I love to experiment, but I always want to make sure to capture the vision of the artist. I use references provided by the artist as a target to aim for. My years of experience have taught me how to understand the sonic goals of the artists I work with.

  31. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  32. A: I own a full service commercial studio in Maine called Anchour Studio. The facility features one main tracking room with separate control room and vocal booth. We also have a secondary control/mix room with overdub booth. I have a purpose-built home studio where I keep my collection of synths and guitars. I work out of this space for remote productions and I bring clients to my main studio for in-person sessions.

  33. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  34. A: Paul Meany (Mutemath, twentyonepilots) Tedd T, Ryan Tedder

  35. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  36. A: I produce and mix full tracks for artists. I edit, tune and polish everything until it hits. I regularly perform all instrumentation on my productions.
