Interview with Thomas Sykes

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I am especially proud of is my release together with MDW - "Addicted To Your Love", which has reached over 16M streams worldwide. I was involved as the songwriter and vocalist, bringing the creative vision, songwriting and performance together to create a record that connected with listeners internationally.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am currently working on my own solo releases alongside multiple collaborations with artists and producers internationally, mainly within the Pop and Dance music space.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both. Digital technology gives incredible flexibility and speed, while analogue equipment can add character and warmth. The best results usually come from combining the strengths of both.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: My promise is to always deliver my highest level of creativity, professionalism and quality. Every project deserves a vocal and performance that helps the song reach its full potential.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Creating something from nothing. Taking an idea, emotion or production and transforming it into a finished record that connects with people is the most rewarding part.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: Clients often ask how quickly I can deliver. My answer is that timing depends on the project, but my experience allows me to work efficiently while maintaining a high standard of quality.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: People often assume working quickly means something is easy. In reality, speed comes from years of experience, understanding songwriting structure, knowing how to approach a record and being able to make strong creative decisions under pressure.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: I like to understand the vision behind the project: the intended audience, release plans, creative direction and whether it is an independent release or a commercial label project. This helps me deliver the right approach for the song.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Have a clear vision of what you want to achieve, but also be open to creative input. The best records usually happen when the artist, producer and vocalist work together to make the strongest possible song.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: A great microphone, something portable like an MPC Live, an acoustic guitar, quality headphones and a reliable pair of battery powered studio monitors. The tools matter, but creativity and experience matter most.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I have been professionally involved in music for over 20 years, working as a vocalist, songwriter, performer and artist. Throughout my career I have released my own music, performed internationally, collaborated with artists and producers, and developed a deep understanding of the commercial music industry.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: My style is rooted in Pop, but influenced by many genres including R&B, Rock, Soul. I always aim to bring emotion and personality while adapting my sound to fit the vision of each projec

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Ryan Tedder. He is one of the best examples of someone who combines incredible songwriting, vocal ability and a deep understanding of commercial music.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Less is often more. The strongest productions usually leave space for the emotion of the vocal and the main elements of the song to shine.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: My main focus is Pop and Dance music, including Pop Dance, EDM, Deep House, Future House and commercial electronic music. I also enjoy working across different genres when the song connects creatively.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: My strongest skills are vocal performance and toplining. I have spent many years developing the ability to quickly find and deliver strong melodies, hooks and vocal ideas that complement a production.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I bring a combination of vocal performance, songwriting instinct and a strong understanding of what makes a record connect with listeners. Beyond just singing, I focus on creating memorable melodies, emotional delivery and a vocal identity that fits the artist and production

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: I always start by understanding the emotion and direction of the track. Once I connect with the song, I focus on finding the right vocal identity, melody and lyrical approach that serves the production. My experience allows me to work efficiently while still delivering a unique and personal performance.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I record through a professional setup built around a RØDE NTK microphone into an SSL interface and Logic Pro X. It is a reliable combination I have used for years, delivering a warm, detailed vocal sound that translates well across different genres and production styles.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: I’m inspired by artists and producers who combine creativity with commercial impact. Ryan Tedder, Max Martin, The Weeknd, Coldplay and Calvin Harris are examples of artists who understand how to create music that connects emotionally while still reaching a global audience.

  41. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  42. A: Not currently

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I primarily work on professional session vocals, toplining (lyrics and vocal melodies), and songwriting for artists, producers and labels worldwide. Many clients approach me after hearing my own releases, which have generated over 30M streams globally, looking for a distinctive vocal identity and commercial songwriting approach that can elevate their records.
