Interview with Lynda Starr
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Empowerment EP, co-writing for Independent/Major artists
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I'm an old soul, so Analog since these days digital is becoming more processed, but is more convenient.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Authenticity and sincerity.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I enjoy the connectivity of music, the fact that it brings people together from all walks of life. My music, my voice can make a positive difference in someone's life.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Work for hire questions.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: People think singing is easy, but it's a lot of hard work. I enjoy what I do and have trained many years for my voice to be in the healthy condition as it is. I take my craft very seriously and didn't just wake up and decide to sing. It is my designed purpose in life!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: When do you need the project by?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be clear and provide as many details about your needs for your project so that I can better serve you and establish a healthy relationship. Communication and professionalism is key.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Easy. My microphone, Interface, macbook, headphones, and speakers!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Singing since I was 3, writing since I was 8. Grew up singing in church in the Gospel choir, and continued singing in choirs up until college.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Soulful, edgy, and real.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Brandy because her voice is impeccable, and she's one of my inspirations!
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Be consistent and expand your ear.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: R&B, Soul, Gospel
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My passion for music.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring soul, emotion, connection and depth to any song that I sing. Every song has a story, and it's my goal to illustrate that story and bring it to life with my vocals.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: In terms of songwriting, the process varies. Either the melody or the lyrics come to me first, or both at once (which is even more rare yet awesome). I like to build and stack harmonies, and I'm very strong on melody/
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I typically record in a rehearsal space in Williamsburg called Spaceworks. There I have my Focusrite condenser microphone, interface, and my Macbook with Logic Pro X.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: John Legend, Missy Elliott, Timbaland, & Pharrell all inspire me music production wise. My biggest inspirations are Mary J. Blige, Toni Braxton, Lauryn Hill, and Alicia Keys.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Session work, vocal arrangements, hooks, background vocals, and drops.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I wrote a Gospel song for an artist named Carmen Brown entitled, My Smile. The song was played on rotation on WBLS 107.5 FM and heard all across the country! I was so thrilled!
