Q: Analog or digital and why?

A: Both. I choose the tools for the sound and the performance, with digital editing and recall helping us refine the record efficiently. The result matters more than the format.

Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

A: Clear communication, careful listening and a record built around your sound. You’ll know the agreed scope, what stage we’re at and what happens next.

Q: What do you like most about your job?

A: The moment an artist hears the record coming together and recognises the sound they had in their head. I enjoy the relationship as much as the detail of making the music.

Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A: Can we work together remotely? Yes. I send a Muse link for live listening and discussion; for recording, we check your setup and use the desktop app. Can I request revisions? Yes: we agree the rounds in your proposal, and you can leave clear notes against each mix. Is mastering extra? It is included in mixing and full production.

Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

A: That production is mainly about adding sounds or fixing everything afterwards. Often the biggest improvement comes from a better performance, a stronger section of the song or knowing what to leave out.

Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

A: What are you making, and where is it now? What do you love about it, and what needs help? I’ll ask for references, the number of songs, the recordings you already have, your timing, budget and release plans so I can suggest a clear scope.

Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A: Listen to the work and look for someone who understands the feeling you want, as well as the sound. Send an honest rough demo and tell me what you need help with. It doesn’t have to be polished before we can have a useful conversation.

Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

A: My laptop, a microphone, an audio interface, a guitar and headphones. Enough to capture a song and build something around it.

Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

A: I grew up in Brisbane, studied audio production at SAE and began as a singer and performing artist. My early development included writing sessions with Sheppard and work with producers including Stuart Stuart, Simon Cohen and Mitch Kenny. Writing and production for other artists became my focus, taking me from Australia to Los Angeles and Stockholm, including work with The Kennel. I’m now based in Kristiansand, Norway, and founded Magnus Records. I bring that experience to artists locally and internationally.

Q: How would you describe your style?

A: Personal, vocal-led and built around the song. I like combining organic performances with electronic production when it serves the artist, while leaving space for the emotion to come through.

Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

A: Coldplay, for the way they connect personal writing with a sound that keeps evolving. FINNEAS also interests me for the detail and personality in his writing and production.

Q: Can you share one music production tip?

A: Get the feeling right before polishing the details. A convincing vocal performance and a strong song will do more for the record than another layer of processing.

Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

A: Mostly pop and its different forms: intimate singer-songwriter records, emotional ballads, electronic pop and bigger vocal productions. The artist’s identity guides the sound.

Q: What's your strongest skill?

A: Vocal production. Being a singer helps me understand what it feels like on the other side of the microphone. I work on the performance, phrasing, harmonies, comping, tuning and mix detail while protecting the character of the voice.

Q: What do you bring to a song?

A: An artist’s perspective, strong vocal instincts and attention to the relationship between the writing, performance and production. I listen for what makes the song yours, then shape the arrangement and sound around it.

Q: What's your typical work process?

A: We start with your song, references and the feeling you want to create. We agree the scope, fee, revisions and schedule, then build the record together. You hear the work as it develops, with live sessions when useful and time-stamped Mixup feedback between versions. After approval, I deliver the final master and agreed versions and stems in an organised folder.

Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

A: I work from Magnus Records Studio on Odderøya in Kristiansand, Norway. My setup centres on Pro Tools, UAD Apollo and a vocal recording chain suited to detailed tracking and editing. For remote sessions I use Muse, so the artist can hear the work, see my screen and stay involved in the decisions.

Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

A: Ryan Tedder, FINNEAS and Max Martin. I’m drawn to how they connect strong songwriting with a distinct production identity and a vocal that makes you feel something.

Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

A: Full production and mixing, with a strong focus on vocals. I help artists develop a song from a voice note or demo through writing, arrangement, production, vocal recording and editing, mixing and mastering. I also work on finished productions that need a mix and master.

Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

A: Papercuts by Joel Adams. I co-wrote, produced and mixed it, and I’m proud of how the emotional writing connects with the blend of organic and electronic production. I also co-produced his 2025 recording of Please Don’t Go (Joel’s Version). Another milestone is Glow Up by i-dle, MIYEON and Jike Junyi, a CUBE Entertainment release I co-wrote and co-produced. It reached No. 1 on NetEase Cloud Music’s Korean music chart in China as of 24 April 2025, as reported by Maeil Business and Star News.

Q: What are you working on at the moment?

A: Production, vocal production and mixing for artists in Norway and internationally. My work includes both live collaborative sessions and focused production and mix work between sessions.
