It was great meeting Magnus on a writing trip to Sweden. He's not only an all-rounder with toplining and songwriting but an incredible musician and producer too. Would highly recommend him for your next project!

Interview with Magnus Murphy

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Papercuts by Joel Adams. I wrote, produced, and mixed on this one. It was the first record I did with Joel and I was a fan of his music beforehand. The record itself is one of the most deeply emotional and relatable records I've worked on from a songwriting point of view, and I'm extremely proud of the enormous hybrid of organic and electronic production that was involved in bringing the song to life.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am currently working on the following projects: - Joel Adams new upcoming EP, I have written, produced and mixed for - Writing and producing for K-Pop groups in Korea - Toplining and producing for various female pop artists such as Alunawolf, Tiana Rosie and Emily-Jane Conidi (The Voice Australia)

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Rory Hope and James Angus.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. It's a hybrid world with tighter deadlines. The digital tools that I use and the knowledge and skills that I have in the way I use them are of such a high quality, most can't tell the difference. I always use either analog or digital formats when the right project calls for the right format.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will never compromise on the quality of delivery.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love the creative opportunity that allows me to bring a client's sonic vision, dream, and goals to life and most importantly deliver beyond their satisfaction or what they had expected.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Can they have revisions? Yes, I am flexible when it comes to revisions and I always want to ensure that the client is satisfied with my work and delivery of the project to their liking and expectations. In saying that, usually my policy of 3 free revisions are enough to complete the project.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: 1. What production services do you require (e.g. Topline, lyrics, instrumental production, full production, etc)? 2. Do you have any references of songs or artists that may inspire the direction or sound for the project? 3. How many tracks do you require? 4. What is your budget for those services and when do you need to project completed? 5. What are the release plans or destination goals for the project?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: My best advice is please contact me to have a chat. I am open-minded and eager to assist in developing any project, however, it's also always better if the customer has a clear idea of what their vision is and a realistic timeline.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: 1. My MacBook Pro 2. Slate ML-1 3. Guitar - Preferably electric 4. Midi Keyboard 6. Studio Monitors

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: - Full-time songwriting and producing for 4 years and before that part-time for 10 years. - 2013 I began as an artist and studied a Bachelor of Audio Production at SAE in Brisbane, Australia. - 2016 I was in development as a solo pop artist shortly after that, working with the band Sheppard (Geronimo), and wrote, produced, and released a solo EP that I co-worked with the top producers at Studios 301 Sydney such as Simon Cohen, Jack Prest, and Stuart Stuart. - 2017 - On the side of releasing solo music and gigging, I began writing and producing for other artists which through word of mouth, began my full-time passion and focus. - 2018 I worked in LA for 3 months working with labels such as Rostrum Records - From 2019-2021 I was writing and produced from my studio in Brisbane, Australia for other artists and labels. - 2022 I recently moved to Stockholm to work here full-time after an international writing trip to London, Sweden, and Norway in 2022.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: I am always eager to tell a story or show an authentic side of an artist or project rather than focus on a specific style. If the authenticity and feeling are there, I'm not particularly fussed about the genre.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Coldplay has always been an artist I look up to as they write their life experience and feelings whilst keeping their sound current with the changing market as well as always staying true and unique to themselves. Second is Finneas due to his unique songwriting and production as well.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Songwriting, then Feeling and performance is always the most important thing to focus on. A track is always only as good as the songwriting, and the songwriting can only be truly showcased by a great performance.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Anything within the Pop realm. My forte is Ballad pop and electronic Pop. Anything from Olivia Rodrigo to Tove Lo for females and from Ed Sheeran/ Lewis Capaldi to the Weeknd/ Justin Bieber with males.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Being a vocalist myself I understand the importance of a high-quality vocal and how to achieve it in all aspects of a project. From the Topline songwriting, melody, and lyrics, to vocal performance, recording, editing, and mixing. I have also previously worked with the best vocal producers and singers in Australia and now carry on their methods to achieve a world-class vocal production.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Having worked with some of the best producers in Australia and from writing and collaborating with writers, producers and artists internationally I have a high standard and knowledge of producing high-quality, tracks to suit the genre and to the correct format/ genre quality for wherever the track is being distributed and played. Also, being a 30-year-old songwriter/ producer who has lived and traveled internationally whilst working in the music industry for years, I have lived many life experiences and can emotionally relate to being able to interpret any artist or producer's vision for the project and create an emotionally, unique and catchy topline to suit the projects if required.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: - Discuss the vision and project with the artist or collaborator to ensure I know the direction for where to take the project - Create instrumental or beat by programming and recording all instruments myself (exception being I usually get session musicians for any live drum production) - Topline (record and write) melody over the instrumental - I then write lyrics to fit the melody and suit the song - Mix and finalise any processing - Master the track or send to another mastering engineer

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I have my own fully acoustically treated professional studio that I work in at Westwood Studios in Stockholm amongst some of the best writers and producers in Sweden. I have custom tailor-made studio monitors that are perfectly tuned to the room. I run Logic Pro and Protools depending on the style of the project I am working on. I mainly produce instrumentation in Logic Pro as most Swedish projects prefer to work in and record audio, edit, and mix in Protools. I record using my Slate VMS ML-1 large diaphragm condenser microphone and DI electric guitars through my UAD Apollo MLII interface. I use all the best-renowned plugins and virtual instrument bundles from Native Instruments, to FabFilter, Waves, Soundtoys, and more. I have a Native Instruments Komplete midi controller keyboard.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Ryan Tedder, Finneas, and Max Martin are all visionary songwriters and producers that inspire me. Whilst they all are the best at what they do, they each have a unique flair to them.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: When an artist or co-writer wants me to work on their project, I ensure I understand their end goal or vision, then get inside their mind to bring their vision to life. If an artist needs a song written or help writing a song, I will write it for or with them then produce the instrumentation around it to bring the song to life. I usually mix as I go and then revise it on completion. If an artist already has written the song, I ensure I bring it to life in the production and mix as well.
