Interview with jm.

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I work record to record!

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: 1) F6 Dynamic EQ 2) Pultech EQ 3) LA-2A 4) SSL Channel Strip 5) Softube Saturation Knob

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I started mixing at home, around January of 2013. I attended SAE Institute of Technology, in NYC, for the entire year of 2015. I worked on many different records, for a small handful of artists, over the years, getting better with each record! I have now been mixing, for 9 years!

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: Russ. Not because he looks like me (LMAO), but because I want to be able to get his permission to mix his vocals, since he is very keen on mixing his own records. I see it as a challenge, because if Russ allowed me to mix his vocals, or just one of his records in general, then that would mean he holds me to a very high regard, as a Mix Engineer!

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: S.C.A.B. It stands for, Sibilance Cut, Air Boost. This little trick, allows for all of my vocals to sit in the mix with a nice open high end, without it being too sibilant! So, you cut the sibilant frequency, but also boost the highs, with the same EQ. I prefer to achieve this, using a Dynamic EQ!

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: Hip Hop, R&B.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: Consistency!

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: My own combo of mixing styles! I believe that when you are mixing, you are in fact telling a story. So, the story of the record is told with the mix, aswell, not just the song lyrics!

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: I usually comp vocal takes together (if they aren't already). Then, I will have 2 Mixing Sessions. One, where I mix the song to a nice pocket of 80% completion. Another one, where I take a few hours of rest, to reduce ear fatigue, and come back to the mix, with fresh ears, to complete the final 20%! Finally, I usually sit on the mix for 24 hours, and have an objective listening session, where I listen to the record, as if I weren't the one who mixed it! This gives me the most honest review of the mix balance!

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: No analog gear, as everything is in the box. However, I do have analog emulations, like the SSL Channel Strip, Pultech EQ, LA-2A, etc.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: Easy Mo Bee (Beatmaker), for his drum sampling. Manny Marroquin (Mix Engineer), for his vocal clarity.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: Mixing, Mastering.
