Interview with Joshua Williams (Jish)
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been into music since I was 12 years old, as a Tuba player. I began singing in college and won two national singing competitions, which helped me discover my talent for singing. I have been a singer since, and have been producing now for two years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: MOODY. I'm a big mood. I like making music that above ALL ELSE, has the feeling and sound that I want. I don't care if its imperfect, I don't care if its hazy, I don't care if a lot of people have opinions - its art. I like making art, and I like projecting my intention.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: JOJI, Gwen Stefani, Diplo
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don't rush the process for anyone. You will always see things after a song is complete you wish you could still edit and add in - give those things times to find you while you still have the opportunity to edit.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Lofi, Pop, Experimental Pop, Ambient Pop
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Flexibility!
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Sincerity. I won't sing anything I can't make a connection with, and I won't share anything that doesn't make me feel what I expect others to feel.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I usually work alone, I make the beat first, write lyrics, and piece them all together. I am looking to get away from the beat making process, and instead just work on my vocal expression.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I record out of my bedroom closet!
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Joji is one of my favorites. I love his effort to perfect the "barely try" sound.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I am often hired to help engineers and producers whom don't have a vocal feel, or idea in mind. I am trusted to my interpretation and emphasis on vibes and feels.
