Interview with Demitrius Smith

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I'm rereleasing my album Bonds. Slowly rolling out the singles before reuploading to on all platforms

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Analog would be ideal, however digital is just far too flexible and versatile. It's extremely more accessible.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: I just love creating. Bringing something to life from essentially nothing. There's power in that

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: Simply, what are you looking to get out of my end? What are you looking for me to provide?

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: I have a way of fully understanding what a customer wants even if they aren't able to articulate it the way they see/hear it in their head. I just need your thoughts and the mood you're trying to set and we can work this out.

  11. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  12. A: My laptop. My Mic. My audio interface. Acoustic foam(could this count as 1?). And electricity I guess haha, or I'd only have about 5 hours of creating before my laptop dies.

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: Fully self taught. I've been writing music since I've learned to write. Mixing and mastering came out of necessity of wanting to create music yet not having the resources to get a song produced. Now it's probably my favorite part after about 10 years of doing it now.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: Very soft smooth, and melodic. I'm not the type to do a lot of runs and belting. I'm not built for that. I bring solid harmonies and chords.

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: Working on a track with Trevor Jackson would be a dream. Along with Jacob Latimore and Tank. I feel like I'd mesh best with them. Some others: KIRBY, Amber Riley, Jasmine Sullivan

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: Just start. Often times we think "if only I had THIS piece of equipment" or "if only I had THESE plugins." A lot of the free stuff out there are very capable. However, DO invest in yourself as well. That means your time and your money. It's worth it.

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: Mainly Soul/R&B. However, I have created emotional cinematic backing tracks and theme songs.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: I do a full "mind map" for every song. I write out the ideas/themes of the song and expand from there, detailing where things overlap to create a unique, creative, and cohesive piece.

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: I have a fully treated in-house isolation booth. Currently recording out of an sE Electronics X1 Condenser Mic. It has a sweet un-harsh high end that I love.

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: Trevor Jackson has jumped into the forefront of my favorites. Jacob Latimore also. However can't go wrong with the likes of Tank, B. Cox, Ne-Yo, Donnell Jones as artists/producers/songwriters.
