Interview with Ethan Horbay
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: For me, there's no choosing between analog and digital – I see them as a perfect duo! Analog gear and instruments are essential for that authentic, lifelike tone and emotional connection in music. However, the realm of digital sound opens up incredible possibilities for enhancing and manipulating those analog recordings. It's the best of both sonic worlds coming together.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Describing how you envision your song to be can be quite abstract. My role is to decipher your ideas and concepts, and then actualizing them using a instruments, sound technology, and a careful ear.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My approach starts by understanding the project's essence and building up into a complete composition. For original songs, I commence with the overarching chords or melody and expand outward by adding more layers. When finalizing an existing track, I emphasize vocals or lead instruments, constructing the mix around them for standout quality.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I operate from a sound-proofed room that's my all-in-one hub for crafting clean sound and music. I record my guitar and bass using amps and mics, and play electronic instruments and drums on keys and a midi controller. I use Ableton for production and Pro Tools for mixing.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm drawn to musicians and artists who embrace the "less-is-more" approach in production, infusing their music with profound emotions through simplicity. Icons like John Frusciante, John Mayer, and Daniel Caesar exemplify this masterfully. They skillfully select notes that resonate deeply, using them to weave narratives and evoke unfiltered feelings in their distinctive styles.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: My typical focus involves enhancing clients' sound. For vocal recordings, I'll make your voice shine. With full songs, I craft beautiful mixes. Need extra instruments? I'll add what's necessary to capture your music's essence.
