Endorse Matias MaisonnaveInterview with Matias Maisonnave
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Some people think that the only thing we do as producers is recording and putting tracks in some places, maybe some corrections. That is something we do... in persuit of a bigger goal. A good producer gets inside the project. Have deep conversations with the artist, if its needed. Its about dealing with emotions and finding the best ways to express them.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be careful on how he/she works. This Job requeries a lot empathy. You want your producer or mixing engineer to be open and willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish your goal, even doing things that are out of what he/she usually does.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Acoustic guitar, little drum set or some percussion, microphone ,console, speaker
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Working on an album (EP), which contains 3 songs I wrote, produced and mixed.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will not end my Job until you're satisfied.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Give the help and work to turn ideas, feelings, or goals into something that can remain forever. And let the artist happy. Songs is the best expression and they are the greatest Mark you can leave after your pain, Joy, anger, or any story. And I like to think I have the tools for allow some artist to achieve that. In the production, songwriting or even in the mixing.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Their purpose. What are their goals with these project. Are their open to suggestions? On lyrics? Playing of their instrument or singing? So I can know where can I help and how.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been writing songs for 15 years. Mixing since 2014 and playing all the instruments since the beggining. Also producing artists for about 6 years now.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Honest and efficient. 100% dedícated to each project.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always start with the talking, and be careful through the process in which every step counts. But one thing over all, ALWAYS TRY EVERYTHING. Dont say NO if you haven't considered that idea.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rock, Pop, Acoustic music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: The songwriting, understanding of emotions and what the artist is trying to express, then bring that to life through the music, including also the post production in the mixing.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Im a songwriter and I play many instruments. I can bring to a song whatever it needs, only when I've understood what the artists needs, then I could start the search. With great comunication I am sure we could reach that shared goal.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I usually start with the song/álbum structure. If the songwriting its already done. Then I proceed to look for the elements we might use, drums or not, acoustic guitars or Electric, or both. I like first to récord an idea of the whole song, and then work based on that idea. It has to be a solid idea to then proceed with confidence. In the mixing I like to do one first mix, based on what I think the song needs, and what the artist told me he/she wants from it. Then I get the feedback and try to pleace the artist.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I own a home studio, with my interface TASCAM which I only use to work in my place. Also if I have to add some guitars, piano, bass or vocals. Other wise I work in a much bigger studio where I can record drums or something else which requeries room or more setup of mics. My favourite for recording vocals is my valvular microphone RODE. I have recorded 3 albums with it and I am very happy with it. I've been working on Cubase Pro since 2014.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: As a Producer, I am very inspired by Rick Rubbin, Bruno Mars, Daft Punk. I am also inspired by some awseome songwriters like Chris Martin(Coldplay), Adele, Bruno Mars, Jack White. The Red Hot Chili Peppers are the ones who have been inspiring me the most through my whole carreer.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Songwriting for other artists or help in the process. Producing and Recording groups, mostly rock bands. Playing various instruments also for the mix.
