Interview with HEM
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: This is an odd thing to say, but I’m really proud of my demos. I love listening back to them and reflecting how they all came to be, and when they sell, I’m the happiest person in the world!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am working on several demos to showcase my experience and sound. I have about 5-6 ready for recording!
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I do! I’ve worked with Camilo Silva F. Mastering quite a few times! He always does so well with mastering and feedback! Definitely one of the best!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I prefer digital. I don’t mind analog, but I love technology and the whole feel of digital gear. It’s so interesting and complex!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is that I will give them my all. I don’t just produce to make money—I purely do it to help others! I remember when I struggled back then, so I want to help them and ensure that they will be successful and satisfied.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love working with people and making them happy. It can often be difficult to make a good song that’ll bring a smile to their faces, but when you do, it’s worth it!
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: I typically am asked about my experience. I may only be a few years into producing, but I’m getting new experience every day!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Not quite sure…I’m sure I’ll come up with an answer sometime, though!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I immediately ask what kind of vision do they have/what sound are they looking for the song. I believe that carrying out their thoughts and wishes is the key point when working with any of my clients.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Take your time when looking! You shouldn’t rush into finding a song (unless there’s a time limit, of course!). As long as you communicate and find the write people, things will work out in your favor! No stress!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I would take a laptop, mic, pop filter, headphones, and speaker!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I first started writing songs in 2019. I obviously wasn’t good back then, but I truly enjoyed it, so I wrote over 20 songs in less than a year. Around the end of 2021, I dropped my own album, only to find out that being an artist wasn’t for me. I realized that I loved being behind the scenes and creating music more than being the entertainer. Since then, for about 3+ years now, I’ve been gaining experience with producing and have never lost my love and drive for it since.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would describe it at…interesting. I don’t quite fit in to any genre, and I love to experiment with many different sounds and genres that I don’t have a specific sound. Perhaps it’s complexity yet simplicity?
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: My dream would be to work with NCT. They are the reason I got into producing in the first place, and I would love to help them as they have helped me.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Find inspiration in everything. I’m an easily inspired person, so even the smallest things like watching the rain fall or hearing an odd instrument in a song, one little bit of inspiration can help you create something beautiful from it. If you’re not easily inspired, it’s best to find peace and quite before sitting down and making a song.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I find myself creating a lot of hiphop and pop songs. It’s almost as if the two are fused together with a mix of alternative. I don’t really stick to one exact genre—it’s almost always a mixture of two or more.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is definitely creating beats and instrumentals. Everything just comes naturally and it’s never a difficult challenge for me.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I believe that I bring complexity and flavor to a song. I personally enjoy experimenting with unique sounds. I try to never repeat the same verses in songs, and contrast is one of my main goals when it comes to producing.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I usually come up with a single or a few key words before I start my process. I soon begin to record short voice demos that’ll help me develop the song itself as well as the instrumental and lyrics. After collecting a few demos, I complete the instrumental and begin writing lyrics. Once the lyrics are complete, I record, edit, and roughly mix all that needs to be done to complete the demo.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I am currently working on a professional at-home studio. I have excellent monitors, a computer, a mic and all the necessary recording gear, as well as a few other things.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Moonshine is my biggest inspiration. They’ve not only made so many hits and amazing work, they really care and put their all into their songs, no matter who the song is for or what the song turns out to be. I aspire to be as passionate and hardworking as they are!
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I typically make specialized or customized songs for my clients. They may have an idea for a certain song but don’t know how to form it into a completed song, so I come in and do that for them. I do my best to work quickly and precisely to make it the easiest experience for them.
