Interview with Aaron Kusterer | AK Studios
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I tend to lean more towards bold and in-your-face when it comes to mixing and productions. But, everything comes back to the song/artist. If that's what it calls for, then cool. If not, then I'm equally not afraid to really dial things back as appropriate.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to have the opportunity to work with Deen Castronovo. An amazing voice and talent with a tremendous career to back it up.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Tip: Sometimes those most impactful items in a mix/song, are those that aren't necessarily heard right away but rather, felt.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Lately, it has been a lot of adult contemporary pop.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I'm not afraid to go big if needed.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I try to help a song I'm working on, become the best version of itself while balancing with the artist's vision for their own identity.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: That tends to vary depending on the song/artist that I'm working on or with, but generally I try to keep everything focused on the song from asking the artist at the very beginning to play/sing the song for me the way they hear it, to putting final touches on it at the very end after a song is all but completed.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a mix and production focused setup. I love everything within arms reach (as much as possible) so the studio build is based around that. Currently, I'm recording with 500-series preamps (primarily Great River) and Antelope Audio preamps. Monitoring is done through a Satori system out to DynAudio and Avantone monitors.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm tremendously inspired by folks like Chris Lord-Alge, Sting, Muna, and Mutt Lange. Odd hybrid of folks, I know . . . but they are all fearless in their approach to the music they work on. I love that.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common thing I'm asked to do is help take a song from chords and a voice (i.e. singer and guitarist format) into a fully produced song that is ready for release.
