Alex Cook on SoundBetter

Writer, producer, and mix engineer based in my own recording studio in Battersea, London. Specialising in punk and rock productions and mixing, I'm all about delivering gritty, engaging, and punchy music. With over 8 million streams and 7 years of experience, I'm here to help you through creating the best music possible!

I started my musical journey playing drums at 7 years old! Soon after, i picked up the guitar, which lead to bass, then banjo. Throughout school I was in multiple bands, eventually learning to write and record my own original music. As of today, i am fortunate enough to work with amazing musicians daily.

I have been signed to Sony music, where I produced and mixed all of Rose Dive's catalogue, currently at 7 Million combined streams. I am the primary songwriter, producer and mixer for my band "Punkband", signing to MNRK records and Raw Power Management in 2020. I've performed to crowds of more than 10 thousand and toured the UK many times.

Nowadays, I work closely with numerous punk and rock singer/songwriters as well as multiple bands, producing and guiding them through their music. I normally work remotely but warmly welcome any local artists to come by for in person writing/recording sessions!

I aim to hand over an engaging and powerful track, whilst closely communicating with you throughout the entire project. If you would like to see more, check out my instagram @spitrecordings. Thanks for looking, lets make some music!

Alex delivered a phenomenal production and recording on our new single. We hired him to mix the project after other mixers bottled, and he aced it. He is a true professional and amazing at what he does. Honestly 11/10 we couldnt be happier!

Best punk mixer on the market. I had a Deathrock inspired song ready and he nailed the vibe of the 80's goth genre perfectly, but gave it some nice modern mastering that really made the track shine. Will hire again for future punk projects.

So easy to work with, absolute pleasure. Really knows his stuff not just about production but the industry as well. Great ear for heavy music production and still open for feedback. Couldn’t recommend enough.

Interview with Alex Cook

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: Working with different people, different styles, different methods. All keeps my work life varied and exciting.

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: That I have an easy job! It's far from easy, but I understand why someone would think that.

  5. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  6. A: I think Josh Homme would be incredible, he seems to find a uniqueness in everything he does. You never seem to know what's coming next, and I love that.

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: Generally punk, grunge and rock, though I have done some pop and indie work recently.

  9. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  10. A: I think knowing the different genre's I regularly work on very well. Knowing when something is good, and bad, and being transparent with the artist.

  11. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  12. A: Don't worry if you can't play a particular instrument or even write, most parts can be figured out. The vocal is (usually) the most important part of a track so really work on getting that the best it can be! Embrace the uniqness!

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: Haha! A Macbook, a UAD apollo, my Neumann headphones, an SM57 and a vintage U47. I'd probably try and build some instruments!

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: Generally, I will sit down with an artist/band and we'll write a rough demo. Effectively sketching out ideas into the computer. I then take the demo and rerecord anything that might be necessary (live drums, real amps, vocals), ultimately creating the feel and impact of the track. Lastly I will mix, or hand over the session for a mixer. I don't do mastering, but share my studio with a close friend who is a mastering engineer and will always recommend him!

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: Recording wise it's actually quite basic. I work on Logic. I like to have the creative tools set up and ready in the studio (efx pedals, drums etc) and all my plugins on hand in my template. Speed and ease of creativity is HUGE for me.

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: Eric Valentine, Spike Stent, Joe Strummer, Josh Homme...

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: Gritty, punchy and powerful. I love finding unique sounds and ear catching chorus'

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: I do A LOT of writing, production and recording, often working with singer/songwriters which is where I am most comfortable. Always great fun to work with bands though, I jump at the opportunity when they come around!

  25. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  26. A: Err, digital? I try to use analog on input as much as possible, getting the sounds I want at the tracking stage. Once it's in the computer, (usually) it stays there.
