Interview with Jus James
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I’m more excited to work with you than anything else, so please be yourself and be as direct as possible about what you’re looking for. I’m here to serve your music, so feel free to be as detailed as you want.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: J Bass, LapTop, Interace, Tube DI, midi controler keyboard. I can get alot done with that setup.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been in the music industry for over two decades now. I grew up playing bass, drums and keys in church and then pursued a career in music after high school. I played in top 40 bands and jazz lounges until I was able to secure my first tour with Ricardo Sanchez. From that point on, it’s been a blessing.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Rooted in deep pocket, tone and feel.. but very expressive and emotional.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: John Mayer. I believe he excites all the musical aspects of me as a musician, performer, and songwriter.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Preparation and workflow are crucial for creativity and excitement in music production. A clean and organized workspace, along with a clear workflow for your DAW and instruments, can significantly enhance your productivity. Additionally, thorough preparation for your specific production project is essential. Don’t forget to use a professional-grade set of headphones to check levels and tones.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Soul, RnB, and Gospel are my primary musical genres. Living in Nashville, I’ve had the opportunity to record singer-songwriter or country music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: POCKET. Love, love, love a deep focused groove.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Tone, deep pocket, feel, emotion, and expression. I take pride in prioritizing the music and always relish the challenge of discovering the foundation and emotion in a song from a bass perspective.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: After loading the song into my session and locking it to the grid, I usually listen to it and set my markers while getting a feel for the song. This helps me get a rough idea of how I might approach it and what bass or recording method to use, depending on the style and vibe. I then make a small chart, rehearse a few takes to ensure I have it down and pretty much ready to go.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Mac Mini M4 16GB (LUNA / PRO TOOLS) Heritage Audio - HA-73 Summit Audio - TD-100 Eden Traveler Pro Tubed Bass Amp Vintage / Current Fender J and P Basses Lakland Basses and Custom UA Plugs Waves Plugs
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Musicianship and intentionality are what I seek. Artists like D’Angelo, John Mayer, Isaiah Sharkey, Robert Glasper, and Corey Henery come to mind. Each of them is an exceptional musician in their own unique way.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most projects involve: • Writing and recording original bass parts • Enhancing programmed bass with live feel • Re-tracking bass for more tone and groove • Adding arrangement ideas to strengthen the song
