Female mastering craftsmanship 👩🏻‍🎨

Hey I'm Isabel 🤜🤛

I am a Mastering Engineer, Producer and DJ from Berlin. I am pursuing a deep passion for music ever since I first experienced the impact of sound waves entering my auricles. In 2020 I received my first class honour degree in sound engineering and opened up my mastering studio "Olo Mastering" in Berlin, where I also offer mixing duties.

Being an artist myself allows me to empathise with the needs and wishes of my clients. Creating a piece of music is an intensely personal and valuable thing in which someone has invested a great amount of time and energy. It is extremely important to me to treat your music with care and respect to let it reach its full potential.

My studio is currently located in Kreuzberg, Berlin. It is designed as a “room-within-in-a-room” construction and professionally treated by an acoustician.

I'd love to hear from you! We can have a little chat. I am also more than happy to give advise in any kind of musical way : )

It was a pleasure working with Isabel. She provided great initial mix feedback and produced a bigger, fuller sounding version of the mix than I'd thought possible. Awesome communication too. Will look forward to working with her again.

Interview with olo mastering

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Currently I am working on an album that is gonna get released on vinyl. I am doing Stem-Mastering for it

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Both! Why? Cause it’s just the best of both worlds. Digital for clinical work analog for warmth, character and broad changes

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: Im gonna give my very best to make you happy < 3

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: Being my own boss! Making a living with something that is my passion! Experiencing other peoples music on a different level (somehow diving deeper into it)! Making beautiful connections with other musicians!

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: Is the mixdown the result of the best that you could achieve right now? Are you happy with the mixdown? Where do you maybe hear some flaws, where did you experience some issues while mixing? In which direction do you want your music to go? Please name a reference track and tell me what you like about it. Give me some keywords, how you would like your music to sound such as: Open, dynamic, clean, saturated, punchy How much do you want me interfere?

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: I started to study sound engineering in 2017 and finished my bachelor in 2020. During my studies we had a mastering course and I was just so blown away with the fact that how little changes in the mixdown can make it sound so much better. I really like this clinical super precise work that requires a very attentive and sensible pair of ears 👂🏻

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: Always being emotionaly attached to the music I am working on

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: Lots of different styles, but mostly music connected to electronic music : Electro, (Tech)House, Breaks, Techno, Synth Pop, Trip Hop, Ambient, Dubtechno, Experimentel, Downtempo, Avantgarde Pop

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: Hunting for some annoying resonances in the music. Just finding and eliminating one resonance can already open up the mixdown.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: First of all I am discussing with the artists where she/he musically wants to go with their music. Then I am listening (with my eyes closed to not get distracted by visual meters in my DAW) to the whole song/ album and try to figure out where I wanna go on a technical/creative level.

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: Most of the time I am mastering an EP or an album, I also offer Stem-Mastering btw

  23. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  24. A: An album that I worked on last year. I recorded it on my Revox B77 tape machine, which was at that time still sounding a bit noisy and hissy (it’s right now getting a polish so that it’ll not leave to many artefacts in the recording). It really changed the character of the music, making me aware of the decay of analogue equipment and adding some nostalgic melancholic feeling to the music that would have not been possibly to achieve with digital means. I mastered it afterwards and it sound really lush but at the same time so nicely tape saturated. I am proud of the recording and mastering process. Usually a mastering engineer does not change much about the characteristic of the music, just underlining the artists message. But in this case the mastering process changed something, but was still super unobstrusive

  25. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  26. A: “She is just making the track sound louder”

  27. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  28. A: You should first feel if the energy fits on a personal level. I think it is so important that you feel comfortable, respected and have the feeling that you can put your personal outcome in some other hands and ears that you can trust

  29. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  30. A: My ATC speakers My Manley Compressor My Roland JV2080 synth My field Recorder And my sandwich maker of course

  31. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  32. A: I would love to work with Neel since he is also a very inspiring mastering engineer

  33. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  34. A: Get your levels right straight from the start and mix every channel so that the loudest element never hits more than -6dB (in the digital realm!

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: 3D feeling, clarity, warmth, pleasure 🙃

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: My studio is located in the heart of Kreuzberg. I am sharing the floor with other professional producers/ engineers. The studio is soundproof, meaning it was built as a room within a room. It is acoustical treated (absorbers, diffusers, room correction software)

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Mastering Engineers: Heba Kadry, Stefan Betke, Bob Katz Musicians: Biosphere, Deepchord, Donato Dozzy
