Michael Keire on SoundBetter

Are you looking to take your tracks sonically to the next level? What about creatively? Do you want to make sure your songs are radio ready but also maintain their character and soul? That's the goal with every project I work on.

For the last 11 years I've owned Threshold Recording Studio where its been my pleasure to help create recordings for bands like Ellevator, The Dirty Nil, The Arkells, Odario and Wildlife. In this time I've had releases on Dine Alone, Fat Wreckords and Arts and Crafts as well as worked to create seamless audio experiences for media giants Corus media and Live Nation (Ones-To-Watch).

My studio is equipped with an API 1608 console, loads of outboard, as well as a tape machine. It was also designed with the help of Terry Medwedyk (designer of Noble Street). This allows me to mix in a multitude of hybrid configurations ensuring that I deliver the appropriate tone, warmth, sound and translation to every project. Equipment is my palette and I've spent a great deal of time and money to satisfy my own personal love of tone and sounds. I crave trying new things and taking songs to other worlds. Grabbing the listeners attention by taking risks. Or staying focused and simple in others where that is what's appropriate. Its all a matter of experience and taste. Studying this has been a true passion of mine. It is incredibly important to serve the artist and song. To make sure that the artistic expression is made vivid and engaging when the listener hits play. I'm here to make sure that when the time comes your music sounds great in the car, on buds or on the radio. Hit me up & lets talk!

I would gladly recommend Mike and Threshold Recording to anyone looking for recording studio services. He is a really passionate and friendly guy, and he is willing to go the extra mile for anyone. My band did some live off the floor performance videos in his studio space, and they turned out great. This was a complex set up with a lot of things going at once. We also had some great sessions recording drums to tape, this was surprisingly efficient and was totally worth it for the vibes. Mike has really fair prices for the value that you can get from working with him.

Mike is THE guy! He’s exactly what you would want out of and engineer/mixer.. talent, creativity, knowledge and “vibe”. Every session I’ve done with Mike has been a good hang and has turned out sounding fantastic. I couldn’t recommend him enough if you’re looking for someone who puts the music first and wants to work with you to see your vision realized.

Working with Michael on the mixes for our latest record has been an incredible experience. We chose to work with him because of his creativity. He is not afraid to take a chance and has all the gear and know how to take your in the box tracks to the analog world and create “That studio sound”
We couldn’t be happier with the result and I look forward to working with him again on many more projects.

I've had the pleasure of working with Mike on a few projects and have been really impressed with his mixes. His technical proficiency is world class, and his use of analog outboard gear gives him a hybrid digital/analog vibe which adds a tone of mojo, colour, and character to his mixes. A++

My band The Crowleys have been recording with Mike since 2012. About 6 years ago, Mike took a chance on me and gave me the opportunity to work at his studio. Over that time we have not only had a great professional relationship but I can say he is one of my closest friends. Mike is a caring and thoughtful person, which allows him to resonate with many artists and bands. He always strives to help facilitate artists creative visions while using his many years of expertise to give them a truly professional sounding record. The studio gear is top notch and so is Mike, he’s the man!

I have had the pleasure of working with Michael at Threshold several times and I will keep coming back because he has always overdelivered in terms of value. He goes the distance and more to make sure my time there is well spent. Then there's the gear: API console + 2" tape + Barefoot monitors and much more = 1 big sound !!!

I play in a band called The Dirty Nil, we worked on our early 7” releases with Mike and they were certainly the true beginning of our career. Mike is a fantastic engineer with a unique ear for production. If you want maximum vibe, talk to mike. Great studio, great gear, great dude.

Love this place. Love Mike & Cohen. Whole experience was one of the best I’ve had.

Recorded the first Vicious Beast record here and had a blast. You won’t regret it.

I’ve been collaborating with Michael for 15 years now. He’s supported my projects with his stellar mixing skills, his incredible engineering, and has produced/co-produced three full length albums of mine, in addition to two EPs, and a hat full of singles. There’s a reason I keep coming back. Mike truly loves the art process - enhancing each project he touches - making it the very best it can be. That’s if you play your parts right and stay focused on the goal of making beautiful sounding recordings. Mike is patient and very supportive, not rushing the job. He dives deep in to the purpose.

Started with Mike back in 2016 with my band Delta Days and haven’t stopped since. It’s always a pleasure being able to step foot into his studio and continue to work with the gear that is there and the talent that he has. Can’t wait to be back soon

It’s always a pleasure working with Michael! My band tracked our LP back in 2017 to tape at Threshold Studios and shot a live video there as well. Great selection of gear and Keire is super knowledgeable when it comes to everything sound related. Love the space and look forward to working with him again!

Whenever my band Arkells has recorded with Mike he’s created such an awesome environment for us to be comfortable and creative. It’s really apparent that he’s built his studio with a ton of care and attention to detail, and it makes for a really fast and consistent process. Having an engineer like Mike who is always ready to capture great sounds as they unfold is really invaluable for us in the studio.

I am so incredibly grateful for Mike. Where to start? He has engineered and produced songs for my band Dark Mean for over a decade. We were 3 guys with some ideas but we lacked direction and focus and leadership and Mike led us out of the weeds. He taught us about recording. He helped us get comfortable in the studio. He gave us a beautiful space to work/play in and the freedom to make the kinds of records we wanted to make. He took our songs to the next level. He made them sound f*cking amazing. And he is one of the most amazing guys you'll ever meet. Can't recommend him highly enough!

The thing I love most about working with Michael is the final results. He can take any mish-mash of sounds and experiments, pull it together and deliver an incredible sounding recording. My experience recording with Michael dates back over 15 years and from the first to the last, every session is a joy and every recording is a gem.

My band Wildlife have recorded MANY songs at his studio, and he always brings the thoughtfulness and consideration so inherent in his personality and threads it through his work. I’m always genuinely impressed by his workflow. Years of configuration have resulted in a simple yet consistent approach that removes the frustrations that can happen in studios. When executing an idea the pathway is clear, it just “works”, and the sound quality is always fantastic. The attention he gives artists is rare; his passion for tonality and getting at the core of a song will always carry you through...

I’ve recorded several projects with Michael. All of which I’ve been very pleased with. Very professional without sacrificing style and taste. Michael is fluent with many genres of music and is in tune with all the trends of today and yesteryear. Yes yesteryear is a word I think? I would recommend him to anyone.

Interview with Michael Keire

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Just wrapped up an Alt country ep and have two rock eps this month.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Both. Digital because of the clarity and control. Analog because of its character and uncertainty.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: 20 years. Started interning during university while taking cultural studies and philosophy. After spending years working at a couple studios I opened my own and its been running for roughly 11 years now.

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: This is art. There's no such thing as perfect. Just figure out how you want to communicate that vibe, story, song...whatever, and do it as best as you can with the tools around you.

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: Its pretty broad. But generally indie rock, alternative rock, alt-country and folk. If its got live drums I've probably got a handle on it. If i dont Ill let you know.

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: Listening.

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: Character, function and that professional shine.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: Listen. Talk. Share ideas. Plan...And then start digging in.

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: Its a hybrid setup centred around an API 1608 console, Universal Audio Apollos, an MC 2 inch tape machine and a ton of other toys. I love experimenting with texture and sound so Ive designed a studio and workflow to allow me to do that easily.

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: That's tough. There really are too many.

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: Mixing, engineering and production. I do them all regularly.
