Interview with Thaine Smith
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I worked extensively on my first full length album VISIONS, which is set to come out in April-May of 2022. I did all of the production and mastering from the record. Not only that, but the project features all original songs in the style of fusion/straight ahead/acid jazz. Getting to see so many elements come together was a real pleasure.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm working on a jazz singer and guitarist (duo) EP of standards. I played guitar on the record, and want to get my friend on the vocals into the professional music world with his first release! He's got a great voice! I am doing all of the production, and mastering for the EP. Should be out in Feb 2022!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both! Digital has so many conveniences when it comes to recall. The quality of plug-ins has also improved a lot. Analog simulations via plug-ins are also getting good, but they are by no means the same. Analog will always be analog and give you a certain richness and depth that is extremely hard to get 100% accurate, although some plug-ins do come damn close!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is to ensure your satisfaction with the final product- both quality and ease of service. This includes being honest if there is something I cannot do or am unable to do. I pride myself on being upfront and easy to communicate with.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love working with audio of any kind. Being around music fulfills me in a way no other job can. It is simply my passion and always has been!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Mastering: Timeline, budget, expectations, mix vs mastering, state of the project Tracking: lead sheets, groove, feel, timeline, budget.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Reach out to me directly and I will be honest in what I can do for you! I will not court your business if I don't think I can meet or exceed your expectations.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My Boden 8 (eight string guitar), a vintage tube amp, sm57 microphone, audio interface, as an analog saturator for recording.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've always been around music, but recently pursued world class training as a mastering engineer, both for my own music, bust most importantly for my future clients! I know how frustrating it can be to feel your music is missing that final level of finish! I love the attention to detail that music mastering requires.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Make sure that you have an accurate monitoring environment or your tracks won't pass the car test!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I have the most experience with jazz, but am comfortable playing any chord changes and can pick up the feel or groove of a tune quickly. All genres are great!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Custom mastering studio, tuned and isolated. Yamaha HS8 monitors. SSL Fusion and Black Box Analog HG-2 saturators.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I love mastering music and tracking guitar! I love being thrown into a new project and getting the exhilaration and excitement when I get to see what other people are working on. Especially, I love it when I can communicate with my clients and get them the sound they have in their hand and speed them along in their musical process. All too often I see people getting bogged down in the production side of music when it may make sense to outsource it! As a result they may never actually get to the final release of a song or project, even though it has a great message or personal meaning. I am here to bring your projects to fruition!
